Escape chapter 1B
Steve Bird pulled off the state highway into the gas station. He’d been leading, but as they approached the trail they had talked about, he became less sure of his sense of direction. He’d been there a couple of times, but Garrett had always been the one to take the lead. He always marveled that Garrett usually knew a trail somewhere that they hadn’t done. He waved his friend around as he called out on the radio for him to take the lead. Then his phone rang.

Escape chapter 1A
His face was inches from hers, his fetid breath filling her nostrils with its stench. She wanted to retch. Even her own bile in her mouth would be an improvement. She looked into his yellow eyes. All she saw was pure evil. His greasy hair hung down around her eyes, blocking off the rest of the room… his face was the totality of her world.

Lil Black Book
Getz ran knowing he could not outrun the reaper’s grasp for long. He ignored his dry throat and throbbing leg, where the bullet lodged. He knew this would be his last night to run, to breathe air, to think. To think. To think of what it took to turn them in. Every one of them. He had what they wanted and witness protection was not coming soon enough. The train station was not that far but he knew it was not close enough. He grasped the key tightly and headed toward the alley behind the bookstore. He could not go in and draw attention to himself knowing he needed to buy just a little more time. Someone would come by and he would do the right thing. He dropped behind the dumpster and noticed a half empty water bottle. Never in life would he have thought to take a drink but in death, nothing matters. The cool water was a godsend and gave him a few more moments of hope.

The Journal
The Beginning. My time was running out. I should have been done fifteen minutes ago, but here I am looking at this box in the corner with my name on it. The handwriting is my mother’s. I have not seen her in over five years. As I pick it up I hear the front door open. I have run out of time.

Caught in Smoke and Soot
Now, you couldn’t tell just by looking at him, but Adam Scott was a gambling man. He hid it well enough behind a timid demeanour and a sensible car, but he had the itch all the same. Adam wasn’t one to bet more than was necessary, but he was known to go just past too far on occasion. It's why he had to disappear, after all. Coming to Lochlin a few years ago was supposed to help, and it did in a way. He was able to get a job as a mailman, thanks to his friend James. His apartment, though small, wasn’t infested with bed bugs or next to a drug den which was definitely an upgrade. The best and worst part of Lochlin though was the lack of excitement. Each day the same as the last, in a never-ending loop.
