The Monsters We Believe in
Nervously I passed through the maze of prison safety protocols followed by a security guard that could only accurately be described as hulking. As per the arrangement my agent made, I couldn’t go anywhere in the prison without being followed by this giant of a man. He was to be my shadow, silent and ever present.

Public Defender
I looked at the sunlight streaming through the blinds. Another sleepless night. I felt paralyzed. I couldn’t get out of bed. I had to meet with my client this morning, locked up on a moving violation. I forced myself to sit up. I sat thinking for a moment. How much longer can I do this? How low have I sunk?

The Deadliest Emotion
Michael still loudly proclaimed his innocence, even as he was dragged from the courtroom in handcuffs. During the six-week trial, prosecutors had proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that Michael had indeed murdered his wife, Kathleen. His fingerprints were on the knife. There was no indication of forced entry into their home. Witness testimony confirmed the vicious argument that ensued and threats Michael made against her when he found her in the restaurant with her lover. He had no alibi.

A person could die in two minutes flat. You could lose everything in a single breath. You never know. And there's no way you could ever be the same.

Mind My Brother
Through the window, he could see a thin fog creeping across the ground between the gums. He felt an increase in moisture where the sleeves of his polo shirt ended, and his breathing felt restricted. He had often felt like this since events had brought him from his city home to this sixty-year-old house on the northern side of a mountain. A mountain with bush, and bird songs of all types. They even haunted his dreams.
