My name is Iris Mila Matthews. My friends and family call me Mila or Ris. I'm only 19 years old, but this is the story of how my life changed drastically in just one year.....

* bzzzz* *bzzzzzzzz* *bzzzzzz* *bzzzzzz*

I check the time on my computer and see that it's 4 in the morning. All I'm thinking is who the hell is calling me this early.

Still half sleep, I grab my phone and see that it's Ki (Ky). Kian Amir Jones has been my best friend since birth. We were born 5 minutes apart. Our parents are all best friends since their childhood and they wanted their kids to be born on the same day. He's always been stubborn, so I was born 11:57 pm on November 2nd. Ki came into the world at 12:02 am on November 3rd. We would've been born at the same exact time but he turned around until he was ready. It's safe to say not much has changed.

"Somebody better be dying, hurt or in harm for you to be crazy enough to call me at this time."

"Yo chill out and open your damn window girl", he laughs as he helps me push my window up.

"I don't see anything that screams adolescent about this", I laugh as I do a 360 turn.

We're laughing but I sense something deeper is going on with him. Ki's facial expression is yelling for help. Now I know whatever it is I'll have to pull it out of him. Then again, he's never come to my window at this time of the morning. The latest is always 1 in the morning. So just maybe whatever it is has to be pretty damn serious for him to be bold enough to come to me this early. But, I know he needs me so I'm staying 10 toes down and doing whatever it takes.

" I know whatever is going on is deep and I want you to know tha-"

He cuts me off in the middle of my sentence.

" I've been seeing unmarked cars following me around for a couple of days.. I don't want you to worry, but I also don't want to leave you with any unanswered questions or with any confusion..."

He steps closer to me with his head down low. Under these neon lights I see something that I haven't seen since we were in elementary school. I see silent tears, filled with pain, confusion and urgency. I step closer to him and grab his hand. As I lift his chin up and look him dead in the eyes, I pull him to me.

He pulls back from me and turns around.

" Iris,"

" You never call me that... what's going on mir ? Talk to me.."

I grab his arm and turn Kian around myself. At this point I know this is much deeper than I could ever imagine.

He just grabs my face and kisses me. I stumble back onto the bed and he takes his shirt off and things get real... real quick..

It's about 6 in the morning now. He's holding me tight and lost in a daze staring at the ceiling.

"Talk to me Ki."

"I love you Mila..", he states now staring deep into my soul.

I have chills all over. I try to play it off though.

"I love you too Amir"

"No.. I've loved you beyond just a friend for 5 years now. Any time I've handled your exes for the hell they put you through was from anger beyond someone killing your beautiful spirit.. It's because I know I can show you much better than those lame ass dudes.."

Now I'm stuck and find myself crying. I've felt the same way for about 3 years now and my pride would never have let me admit it.

"I love you too Kian," I say sweetly as he wipes my tears of relief away.

"I've felt the same way for a few years now but my pride always got in the way when I'd finally convince myself to let you in on it."

"Well now we can act on it baby girl."

"What are you saying ?" I ask already knowing where this is going, I just want to hear it come out of his mouth.

"Be my woman, you're the only female to hold me down and really have my back through the worst of times. I need you in my life."

I agree and lay back on his chest.

A few minutes of silence go by and I get curious again as to why he's being followed.

"Kian why do you think they're following you ?"

"Last night my brother Hassan called me and told me that word is someone called anonymously and reported that I was the one who killed Jermaine that night... I was with you that whole day and night.. I'm not asking you to go to the police or to tell the police that because we both know that our skin color will cause that to go in any direction. I know that you know and everyone who knows us knows the truth. The whole community knows the truth we all grew up together and all of our people know each other. Everyone knows we were all here for your moms Valentines Day party." He's back in a daze, just staring at the neon lights change colors now.
