Mystery detective story

My second story

By Thariq AnvarPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

Detective Emily Johnson sat at her desk, staring at the file in front of her. It was a case that had been baffling the department for weeks, and she was determined to crack it. The victim was a man named William Barnes, a wealthy businessman who had been found dead in his home. The cause of death was unknown, and there were no signs of forced entry. Emily had been poring over the evidence for hours, trying to find a clue that would lead her to the killer.

As she read through the file, her phone rang. It was her partner, Detective James Wilson.

"Hey, James," she said. "What's up?"

"I think I've got something," he said. "There's a witness who saw a car leaving the area around the time of the murder. I'm going to go talk to them."

"Good work," Emily said. "I'll meet you there."

She grabbed her coat and headed out the door. As she drove to the witness's house, she couldn't help but think about the case. There was something about it that didn't add up. Why was there no forced entry? Why was there no sign of a struggle? It was as if the killer had just walked in and killed William Barnes without a second thought.

When she arrived at the witness's house, James was already there, talking to an elderly woman named Mrs. Jenkins.

"Detective Johnson," he said, motioning her over. "This is Mrs. Jenkins. She saw a car leaving the area around the time of the murder."

Emily nodded at Mrs. Jenkins. "Thank you for coming forward. Can you tell us what you saw?"

"Well," Mrs. Jenkins said, adjusting her glasses. "I was out walking my dog, and I saw a car pulling out of Mr. Barnes's driveway. It was a dark sedan, and I didn't recognize the driver."

"Did you get a license plate number?" James asked.

"No, I'm afraid not. I didn't think to look," Mrs. Jenkins said apologetically.

"That's all right," Emily said. "Thank you for your help. If you remember anything else, please let us know."

As they left Mrs. Jenkins's house, Emily couldn't shake the feeling that they were missing something. She and James got in their car and headed back to the station. On the way, they talked about the case, going over the evidence and trying to make sense of it all.

When they arrived at the station, Emily decided to take a closer look at William Barnes's personal life. She went through his phone records, emails, and bank statements, trying to find anything that might help solve the case.

That's when she found it. A series of mysterious payments, made to an account in the Cayman Islands. The payments had started six months ago, and they were all for large sums of money.

Emily immediately brought the information to James, and together they set to work tracing the payments. It took them hours, but finally, they found the account holder. It was a man named Carlos Rodriguez, a known associate of a local crime boss.

"We need to bring this guy in for questioning," James said.

Emily nodded. "But we need to be careful. We don't want to tip him off."

They went to the chief with their evidence, and he gave them the green light to bring in Carlos Rodriguez. They set up a stakeout outside his apartment, waiting for him to leave.

Finally, he emerged from the building and got into his car. Emily and James followed him, keeping a safe distance. He drove to a seedy part of town, and they watched as he went into a run-down building.

"We need to get in there," James
