Michigan Church Shooting overview

Four people were killed and eight others injured at a church in Michigan. In this piece, we explore what occurred, the suspect, community response, security implications, and takeaways to ensure the safety of faith-filled spaces.

Michigan Church Shooting: Tragedy, Public Safety Implications, and Next Steps

On September 28, 2025, a devastating event occurred in Grand Blanc, Michigan, destroying a church and wiping out an entire community. While the Sunday service was supposed to be a time of peace and restoration, the rest of the day was chaotic as a gunman entered the church, fired multiple rounds, and later set the church on fire.

The violence shook the church, the community, and the country, and sparked new debates about the relationship between security, faith, and prevention. Here, we recount what we know about the Michigan church shooting, discuss the response, and share lessons about security and healing.

Background: During World War I.

The Incident

According to law enforcement and media outlets, the attack occurred at about 10:25 a.m. local time. The church was said to be the meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Witnesses state the suspect crashed a truck at the entrance of the church, drove it into the doors, exited, and began shooting into the churchgoers. He could also have used gasoline or another accelerant to start a fire at the church which added to the chaos.

Casualties and Response

At last reports, there were at least four dead people and another eight people who were injured.

Some of the people injured were found in the burnt structure after the building had suffered damage from the fire.

The local police responded quickly. Officers shot it out with the suspect in the church parking lot, killing him about eight minutes from the start of the attack.

Because of the significant damage, the church suffered extensive damage from both shooting and fire, officers and investigators are still looking for any additional victims or evidence in the debris.

Who was the suspect?

Authorities identified the shooter as Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40, a former U.S. Marine who served in Iraq.

Sanford reportedly lived in Burton, Michigan, nearby. Military records confirm that he joined the military in 2004 and served overseas until 2008.

The motive for the shooting is still unknown at this time.

Investigators are looking at Sanford’s personal devices, any communications he had, and his connections to determine whether this was either a targeted act of violence or related to more general ideological hate.

Influence on the Community and Reactions

Local Response and Grief

The community of Grand Blanc Township and the local LDS community are shaken up. Vigils and prayer services were hosted in neighboring churches. Numerous locals have expressed pain, disbelief, and sorrow at how a place of worship—a place of refuge—became a location of violence.

Local leaders, including Governor Whitmer and law enforcement, condemned the attack and called for support of the victims and their families.

Political and National Response

On a national level, the shooting added to other conversations about mass violence, mental health, and gun control. President Donald Trump condemned the attack as a targeting of Christians and called for more significant measures directed at violence.

The FBI is leading the investigation and described the attack as “targeted violence.” Reports say over 100 agents were dispatched in support of local law enforcement.

This shooting is also the third mass shooting in 24 hours in the U.S., emphasizing the national discourse on the frequency of mass violence.

Why the Michigan Church Shooting Resonates Deeply

Uncertainty of Sacred Spaces

Traditionally, we identify places of worship as safe spaces where peace prevails, prayer abounds, and community flourishes. Now, that space has been attacked and that sense of safety and tranquility is deeply violated.

Interference and competition with Faith & Identity

The target being a church creates an intersection between the faith, identity, and religious freedom realms. Congregants are grieving more than someone committing a violent act; they are sharing their sacred beliefs and interpreation of those beliefs as an attack on a deeply personal and sacred aspect of their lives.

Societal Reflection on Violence & Mental Health

Mass violence incidents always build for reflection on and commentary regarding a societal value of pressure, care of veterans, mental health systems, and possible ideologies that promote mass violence or possible (but unlikely) self-defense. The suspect's military background raises questions about the effectiveness of working through trauma to civilian life.

What can be done to address, reduce risk, and address access to care?

In light of the tragic church shooting in Michigan, here are some thoughts on the impact risk and educating and preparing communities:

1. Creating better protocols for security of worship spaces.

Screening, secure entrance access, and/or "soft-lockdowns." Possible access points for congregants and other safety strategies.

Implementing active shooter drills and utilizing a detailed emergency response.

Providing training based forstaff and/or congregants. Focus on de-escalation concepts and continued assessments of threat perceptions.

2. Mental health and reintegration or care for veterans.

Based on the suspect's history, providing better mental health resources and better treating veterans, at least in the reintegration or transition, may lessen or reduce risks of similarities to the committed acts of violence.

3. Community Vigilance & Reporting

Encouraging congregations to report suspicious behavior or threats can serve as early warning signs. Also, stronger coordination between faith institutions and local law enforcement can also be beneficial.

4. Transparency and Communication

Distributing lessons learned, safety protocols and resources about mental health to congregations fosters trust and preparedness.

Issues & Ethical Issues Regarding Reporting

Media and journalists have responsibility when covering these types of events. For example, the following are principles that are helpful when developing your journalism article on the church shooting in MI:

Focus on the facts, not supposition

Do not sensationalize, glorify or demonize the shooter

Honor and recognize the impact of the victims, survivors and their families

Contextualize, not cause an outbreak of panic

The Future: Healing, Memorialization & Resiliency

While investigations will occur, the community will still have to live with the losses and grief created by this incident. Some of what will move forward includes:

Helping address trauma counseling for survivors

Planning memorials or acts of service to persons who had been in the presence of the victim(s)

Reviewing the security protocols for religious spaces

Calling for public dialogue about pre-violent behavior for prevention

While they were experiencing an agonizing moment of time in MI, and moments after the event occurred, congregations can still respond in a manner that builds community that is united and takes a compassionate, determined stand against those types of tragedies.

Final Thoughts

The church shooting in Grand Blanc Township, MI is yet another reminder of the precarity of safety in what we view as sacred spaces. When at least four lives were lost, and many more indeterminate, we are reminded: vigilance, compassion and resilience are, and will always be the response to tragedy.

As things develop, it will ultimately be determined whether a lasting legacy of this tragedy will be how communities decide to rebuild, embrace and reconcile faith with security.
