Man Attacks Rapist to Stop Attack

Christopher Fletcher rescued the woman

By Criminal MattersPublished 4 years ago Updated 2 years ago 2 min read

In October 2020, Christopher Fletcher was walking along a roadway near Napthens Solicitors Park when he heard strange noises coming from the nearby bushes. Suddenly, Fletcher hears a woman scream. “Help me!: “NO!” NO!, the woman demanded.

Fletcher sprung into action, rescuing a young woman from a brutal rape.

The heavily intoxicated woman walked to the train station on foot after leaving the pub at Metropole Hotel in Southport, Merseyside when 23-year-old Steven Lequesne attacked her. CCTV footage captured the incident.

The woman had a drink with Lequesne at the bar a few moments before the attack. Formerly from Tuebrook, Lequesne lost his place and lived on the streets of Merseyside when he attacked the victim.

The woman escaped from Lequesne’s grip and ran, but he quickly caught her, threw her into the bushes, and began sexually assaulting her.

Fletcher Stops Attack

Fletcher placed Lequesne in a chokehold, then punched him in order to take him to the ground. He telephoned the police and held the man in a chokehold until they arrived.

Police charged Lequesne with rape. He denied the accusations, although DNA samples taken from the victim were later matched to his.

Lequesne had a prior criminal history showing 21 offenses, 15 of them resulting in convictions. Among the convictions were a 2018 conviction for harassment and two convictions for ‘outraging public decency’ in 2019.

Conviction & Sentencing

Although Lequesne’s defense team argued that mental illness played a part in his actions, citing at least two prior suicide attempts, the court recorder told the defendant that he had a “very high likelihood of reoffending and added, “There is no evidence your mental health played any part in this offending and you clearly knew what you were doing.”

Finding him a “danger” to society, Recorder Corbett-Jones found him guilty of rape and sentenced him to 10 ½ years behind bars. He is required to serve ⅔ of the sentence - or seven years -before he becomes eligible for parole.
