Inmate Beats Child Molester Cellmate to Death, Thought He Was Osama Bin Laden

David Faustino Flores told authorities at the Tarrant County Jail that he was schizophrenic and needed a cell of his own. He told them he “can’t handle other people,” and hated the idea of being in a cell cell with another inmate. Officials didn’t heed the warning and placed him in a cell with another inmate. Within days, Flores killed the inmate. He bashed his cellmate’s head onto the floor, killing the convicted sex offender. He said God and his dead mother ordered the attack but denied knowing the man was a convicted sex offender when he killed him.

Flores Attacks Simpson

On November 7, 2018, Flores attacked 76-year-old Clinton Don Simpson. He first struck Simpson, who uses a wheelchair, in the head and body until he fell out of the wheelchair. Immobilized and unable to defend himself, Simpson lay helpless as Flores grabbed him by the hair and bashed his head on the floor more than a dozen times, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Flores had recently been moved to the medical unit of the jail from solitary confinement after a suicide attempt. He was placed on suicide watch and was placed in the cell with Simpson.

Simpson Made Flores Uncomfortable

After the attack, Flores again told officials he did not know the man’s charges, but that he gave him the “heebie-jeebies” by making inappropriate comments. He told them again that he suffered from schizophrenia, that he believed his cellmate was actually Osama bin Laden, and that both God and his dead mother told him killing the man was the right thing to do. He said that he believed everyone inside the jail was part of ISIS.

"My mom said, ‘That’s bin Laden, so you ought to go get him.’ So I went to whale on him … and God said, ‘Go ahead,'" Flores said, according to the Star-Telegram.

Prior Charges

Simpson was awaiting trial on charges that he molested 12 children at a miniature train station he ran in his backyard he called Mr. Don’s Whistle Shop. He once worked as a pastor at a local church. He had been ruled incompetent to stand trial and had spent several years in a psychiatric hospital before officials moved him to the medical unit of the jail.

Flores had been in jail since October on an assault charge. He had attacked an elderly man because he thought he was a member of Al-Qaeda. After learning Simpson had died in the hospital, Flores immediately felt regret, saying he should not have done it and did not mean to kill the man. Flores told officials that he thought the man was going to hurt him.

Case Update
