It was supposed to be just another normal day. The sun was beginning to set when I realized I had missed the last bus home. My phone was almost dead, and honestly, the idea of walking alone for miles on that dark road didn’t sound appealing at all.

Then, a black car pulled up next to me. The first thing I noticed was that the model looked pretty old, but it was in perfect condition. The window rolled down slowly, and a man in his mid-40s looked at me. He wore sunglasses and had a subtle smile, but he didn’t seem hostile.

— Need a ride? — he asked with a calm tone.

I hesitated. Accepting rides from strangers was never something I considered safe, but I was so tired, with no other options, and a bit desperate, so I ended up saying yes. I knew I shouldn’t have accepted the ride, but the fear of being alone in the dark seemed worse at the moment.

As soon as I got in the car, an uncomfortable silence filled the air. The radio played soft, melancholic music, and the smell of the car was a mix of old leather and something metallic. I tried to ignore it and gave a forced smile.

— Where are you heading? — I asked, trying to break the ice.

He took a moment to answer. He seemed to be reflecting on something very important.

— I know this road well. I’ll get you to a safe place, — he said, never taking his eyes off the road.

Something about the way he said that made me uneasy, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. I looked out the window and noticed he wasn’t taking the shortest route. Instead, he had taken a detour down a much quieter road, surrounded by thick trees. My heart started racing.

— I think we’re going the wrong way, — I said, trying to hide my nervousness.

He gave a small smile but didn’t say anything. He just kept driving and turned the radio volume up a little. The mood in the car became heavier. I started to regret getting in, deeply. The road was getting more isolated, and there were no signs of houses or other cars. It was just darkness and trees around us.

Then I saw something that sent a chill down my spine.

Between the backseat and the floor, something was shining faintly in the dim light of the dashboard. I leaned forward a little to get a better look, and my heart nearly stopped: it was a large knife, its blade covered with something dark.

I swallowed hard. My mind raced, desperately trying to find a way out. But I was stuck. The car was moving, and the road didn’t look any better.

Then, he broke the silence.

— Do you believe in fate? — his voice was colder now.

My hands were sweating. I looked at the door handle, calculating whether it was possible to jump out of the car while it was moving.

I was trapped, and the worst was yet to come.

The car suddenly slammed on the brakes, throwing me forward. The sound of the brakes was so loud I could barely hear my own breath. The car came to a halt in the middle of the road, completely isolated, surrounded by trees. He looked at me with a strange smile, but there was no emotion on his face.

— We’re here, — he said with a calm voice, but no empathy.

I didn’t know what to do. But instinctively, I stood up. I didn’t think. I just yanked the door handle and jumped out of the car in one motion, not looking back. I ran, as fast as I could, not knowing where I was going.

My legs were heavy, my body already exhausted, but I couldn’t stop. I glanced back one last time. The car was stopped, but it wasn’t following me. When I looked ahead again, I saw the lights of a gas station in the distance.

I ran towards it. When I reached it, I was out of breath, my body trembling. I explained what had happened to the attendants, and soon the police arrived. They did a search, but the car and the man were never found.

That night remained etched in my mind, like a nightmare I couldn’t shake off. I learned the hard way the importance of safety and how crucial it is to trust your instincts.
