9 UNBELIEVABLE FACTS ABOUT JEFFREY DAHMER
Unveiling the Disturbing Truths of a Serial Killer
Jeffrey Dahmer, also known as the "Milwaukee Cannibal," murdered 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991. He was undoubtedly one of the most notorious serial killers in America. Here are some facts about the killer who aimed to turn people into zombies that you may not have known.
1. Dahmer had his own fan club in school
Jeffrey Dahmer was a strange and obsessive child in many ways. One of his favorite hobbies was dissecting animals and collecting their bones. However, he was also known as a class clown in school and impressed other children with his outrageous pranks. This included faking seizures, which earned him his own catchphrase, "Doing a Dahmer."
Some classmates were so enthralled by Jeff's antics that they formed a "Dahmer Fan Club" and actively encouraged him to continue his shenanigans.
2. He learned bone preservation from his father
Lionel Dahmer, Jeff's father and a trained chemist, was pleased when his son asked him about bleaching animal bones and preserving animal remains. Unaware of his child's true motives, Lionel willingly taught Jeff everything he wanted to know.
3. Dahmer was caught in the act but got away with it
Jeffrey Dahmer had abducted, raped, and tortured 14-year-old Konerak Sinthasomphone. However, when the killer decided to buy alcohol at a shop, Sinthasomphone managed to escape. Dazed and disoriented, the completely naked 14-year-old found help from three women on the street. They called the police before Dahmer could drag the boy back. Despite Dahmer's extensive criminal record and the visible wounds all over the boy's body, including a small hole in his head, the killer convinced the officers that Sinthasomphone was an adult and merely his intoxicated lover.
The women who originally found the victim were incredulous, but the police bought Dahmer's story. They accompanied Sinthasomphone back to the murderer's apartment, which reeked of decomposing flesh because of a previous victim in the bedroom.
Once the officers left, Dahmer killed the boy.
4. Dahmer planned to dedicate an altar to his victims
When Dahmer was finally arrested, he confessed that he had planned to create an altar in his apartment using the remains of his victims. It was a serious project for Dahmer, and he later drew a detailed sketch of the imaginary altar, which would have consisted of a black table adorned with skulls and flanked by complete skeletons.
Dahmer later described this place as somewhere he could "cleanse his thoughts and nourish his obsession."
5. Dahmer took a human head to work
Jeffrey Dahmer worked at a chocolate factory for some time. His work life and grotesque private life intersected when he brought the mummified head of a victim to work and kept it in his personal locker.
"So strong was the compulsion, so bizarre the lust," he later explained in an interview. "I wanted to keep something of the person with me."
6. He was obsessed with Star Wars and "The Exorcist III"
Jeffrey Dahmer's deadly urges cannot be easily explained. It is clear that they developed in his early years. As a child, he was fascinated by dead animals. As a schoolboy, he dreamed of incapacitating a jogger and sexually abusing him. He also claimed his first life just weeks after graduating high school when he picked up and murdered a hitchhiker.
Blaming popular culture for what was happening inside him would certainly be too simplistic. Nevertheless, Dahmer loved the role of the Emperor in "
Return of the Jedi" and even went so far as to wear yellow contact lenses to resemble the Star Wars villain.
One of Dahmer's favorite movies was also "The Exorcist III," which revolves around the actions of a supernatural serial killer. A victim who managed to escape recalled that the film was playing in the background. Dahmer himself said, "I felt so hopelessly evil and perverted that I actually took some pleasure in watching that flick."
7. Dahmer and his glasses
Jeffrey Dahmer wore a pair of glasses known as "Aviator." Several other serial killers had also used the same model before him.
According to his stepmother, Dahmer refused to wear his glasses throughout the entire trial. He did not want to have to look at the faces of people in the courtroom. It was only during the sentencing, where he received 957 years in prison, that he wore them again.
8. Dahmer and alcohol
Dahmer had a serious alcohol problem. He started drinking regularly at the age of 14. His alcohol consumption led to him being expelled from college after the first semester, and his addiction prematurely ended his military career. Alcohol is believed to have played a significant role in turning him into a killer.
Since Dahmer claimed he did not want to kill anyone, he would get drunk before each of his horrific acts, preferably with beer. This led some relatives of his victims to sue a beer manufacturer.
The US brewery "Adroit Theory" picked up on the theme and released a "Murder Box" dedicated to various serial killers, including Jeffrey Dahmer. The public expressed outrage.
9. Odor and other complaints
Glenda Cleveland, a neighbor of the killer in Milwaukee, repeatedly reported to the police that something was wrong in Dahmer's apartment. She heard human screams and the sound of power tools, sometimes in the middle of the night. There was also a stench reminiscent of decomposing corpses. However, the police dismissed the accounts of the African-American woman. It cannot be precisely determined to what extent racism played a role here.
What is certain is that if the officers had followed up on the accusations even once, they could have saved the lives of at least five people.
