55 Million to One: The JonBenét Ramsey Case. The Proof is in the Numbers.

It Comes Down to Science

… is this a safe space?

I need to talk about something. And I need to be heard.

This is not going to be a traditional blog consisting of local news, hearty winter recipes, or Christmas activities for the family.

This is something far more important. And it's something many of you will probably not care about. It's my white whale. The thorn in my side. The itch I can't scratch.

The JonBenét Ramsey Case.

I have been obsessed with this case for as long as I can remember, which frankly isn't that long — but I do recall being very young and my mother telling me about a little girl who died when she was around my age (a decade prior). I think that was her way of telling me not to talk to strangers and that I was too young to start wearing makeup (or else I'd end up dead) but that's neither here nor there.

Anyway, I have read every Reddit post, Subreddit, Substack, AMA, Twitter thread, book excerpt, FBI interview transcript, autopsy report, etc., and have also watched every documentary about this topic, INCLUDING the 3-part Dr. Phil interview with creepy sociopath (and potentially autistic) Burke. Which brings me to my next point.

And let me preface this by saying that anything I say in this blog is alleged and yada yada yada because, while I may be small potatoes, it seems that John Ramsey has unlimited time and funds to sue every Tom, Dick, and Harry who dares to so much as present undisputable facts.

Anyway, I watched the documentary and was really disappointed. Not with John, who I honestly have always felt has seemed like a nice enough guy. He's doing what he feels is right, which is to go on one of the world's most popular platforms and attempt, once and for all, to exonerate his family in the murder of JonBenét before he dies and his younger, attractive new wife and wierdo son Burke are left to fend for themselves.

Who I am disappointed with, however, is the director, the production team, and Netflix themselves. They allowed an entirely biased, one-sided telling of events that overlooked SEVERAL KEY DETAILS (the unaccounted-for pineapple in JonBenét's stomach?!?! The feces-stained pajamas?!? I could write a novel on what they chose to leave out alone) — all in the name of getting John Ramsey to agree to be featured in the documentary.

In doing so, they blatantly misled viewers and gave credence to theories that have already been unequivocally DISPROVEN. The fact that they chose to even so much as entertain the John Mark Karr theory, never mind forcing us to listen to a 5-minute voice recording of a mentally ill pedophile describing a violent sexual assault, when he was not even IN THE STATE at the time of the crime nor did he KNOW ANY DETAILS, was disgusting.

Here’s a brief synopsis of the crime:

JonBenét Ramsey was a six-year-old beauty pageant contestant who was found murdered in her family’s Boulder, Colorado, home on December 26, 1996. Her parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, reported her missing early that morning after discovering an extremely unusual and long-winded ransom note demanding $118,000 (the same amount as her father's Christmas bonus). Later that day, John Ramsey discovered her body in the basement. She had been strangled, suffered a skull fracture, and was sexually assaulted with a paintbrush handle.

The facts:

The ransom note was written with a pen on a notepad from the Ramseys' own home. A practice version of the note was started and then discarded.

The only prints on the note or pen used to write it were those of Patsy Ramsey, JonBenét's mother.

The kidnappers would have had to know the exact amount John received that year as his Christmas bonus, suggesting close and personal knowledge of the family.

Never before in the history of all kidnappings in North America has there been another case where there was a ransom note, and the victim of the kidnapping for ransom was found dead in the same place where the note was left.

From this preliminary information alone, it's pretty easy to draw your own conclusion. In life and in crime, when you hear footsteps, you should think horses, not zebras. That is to say, more often than not, the simplest answer is most likely the correct one. But let's quickly look at some theories.

Theories:

An Obsessed Stalker

Is it possible that a stalker became obsessed with JonBenét, broke into the house while the family was out at a Christmas party, immediately got to work on the 2.5-page ransom note,- which included references and slogans from popular movies (according to the FBI, the note would have taken the writer 21.5 minutes to write), pretended to be from a "small foreign faction," and signed the note "Victory! S.B.T.C.," a reference to John Ramsey's naval training at the Subic Bay Training Center in the Philippines - then familiarized themselves with the complex layout of the four-floor home, hid in the basement, before finally being able to sneak upstairs in the dead of night, kidnap a six-year-old girl, and violently murder her in the same home without being heard? Maybe.

Accidental Killing

Is it possible that the perpetrator(s) are really in fact from a foreign terrorist organization and botched the job, but still decided to leave the ransom note behind for whatever reason? You know, rather than taking it with them on their way out after diverting from their original plan to kidnap her (for a very small and specific ransom), and accidentally killed her?

Important to note: The time between when JonBenét was initially hit in the head and when she was ultimately strangled to death in the basement was between 45 minutes and two hours, so I wouldn't exactly call that an "accident" but sure, maybe.

The Odds:

But what are the odds that a girl between the ages of 5 and 14, who lives in Boulder, Colorado, will be killed by an unknown intruder — and the intruder’s handwriting will match nine characteristics in her mother’s handwriting?

I'm so glad you asked! The odds are 1 in 55 million. And you can see the math for yourself thanks to this incredible thread from a mathematician (or at the very least a woman in STEM) here: 4n6 Blog.

Final Thoughts:

So, there is a 1 in 55 million chance that this note was written by someone other than JonBenét's mother, Patsy Ramsey. But what does that mean?

Ahem I present to you an excerpt from John and Patsy Ramsey's ill-advised interview with Larry King:

Larry King: “So you agree that whoever authored the ransom note probably killed the child?”

John Ramsey: “I agree.”

Patsy Ramsey: “I would agree with that."

I would agree with that too. Sort of. Stay tuned for the follow-up!
