My mom smiled at me. Her smile kind of hugged me.
I've always wondered what it's like to set your children free in a world filled to the brim with unpredictability. Becoming a mother was my greatest accomplishment, and it makes me think of you. It's true what they say, you know, one never understands the love of a mother until becoming one.

You Ruined The Stars
I can't look at the stars anymore. You ruined them for me. You ruined them because we were looking at the stars that night. Shivering. We were the only two left by the fire. Now I know why you stayed out even though you couldn't stop yawning. All of our other friends had long gone to bed but you claimed you weren't tired. As for why I stayed out so late that night, I don't know, but I liked being with you. I liked when we held hands to tease our friends who thought we were together, even after they had left. I liked when I got sleepy and moved closer so I could rest my head on your shoulder and you put your arms around me. I liked hearing our footsteps pound on the asphalt as we ran back towards the fire because the cold was pinching at our skin.

Dear Mom . Runner-Up in Mother's Day Confessions Challenge.
Dear Mom, It wasn’t Aunt Dot who stole the painkillers from the medicine cabinet. It was me. I know, I carried the guilt around with me for 36 years, and trust me, so many times I was going to tell you the truth, and then…I didn’t.

Hey Mom
Hey Mom. I never told you this before, but... I met someone. We have started a beautiful relationship that has already lasted eight years. She and I are growing and living and loving together like true partners should. And I owe much of this beauty to you.

Plaid Boots and Light Forgery
I find myself waiting in a line to visit my boyfriend in prison. That very sentence makes me cringe, but the truth is I got in way over my head with this boyfriend. Truth be told I'm only talking to him because he supplied me with free Xanax. Now I'm returning the favor. I have drugs smuggled into my pants. I have an honest girl next door look, plus I'm a teacher. I'm also a hardened criminal.

Finding Beauty in An Ugly Place
Looking through photographs of me when I was a little girl, you would find that I was a thin girl with blonde hair and blue eyes that were very apparent to everyone. I turned from a skinny toddler to a tall, rectangle-shaped teenage brunette who is wide enough to be noticed by a lot of people. I had a lot of attention directed at me, the majority of it very negative from my peers and adults. I always thought of myself as “ugly” because my hair was cut very short, I was tomboyish, and I did not have very feminine features. I was also suffering from emotional problems due to bullying at school and also abuse in the home. I had hardly any positive role models except for my English teacher who stood by me through it all until she retired.

Love Blossoms the Karmann Ghia Way-One Dog Day of Summer.
The magnificent Dog Days of summer arrived just in time to enjoy the unveiling of my freshly restored VW Karmann Ghia. A far cry from the typical muscle cars I’d previously restored. A real beauty for those who had imagination. While I thought it cute, it hardly compared to the Ferrari 308 GT I’d just finished for a friend.

Things I’ve Learned While Working in a Cosmetics Store
For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a passion for makeup. I view it as an art and have even considered making it a permanent career. I’ve had people encourage me to show off my makeup skills on YouTube or TikTok, and even put serious thought about going to school for makeup artistry. While I haven’t crossed these career paths completely off, I’m not sure that they’re for me. I’ve still learned a lot from working with makeup, and I want to share that knowledge with you.
