## A Personal Journey

### The Struggle

Five years ago, I faced significant financial hardship, juggling three jobs to make ends meet. One month, as my rent was due, my refrigerator was empty, and my paycheck delayed, I received a call from my daughter's teacher about her overdue school fee. Overwhelmed and uncertain about my next steps, I reached out to my best friend.

### An Unexpected Rescue

She came to my office, insisted I take the afternoon off, and took me to an ice cream shop where she bought me a treat. Then she sat me down and said that life can be tough, and I needed to be tougher. To do this, I should treat myself kindly and allow myself a break. If the burdens I carried felt heavy, I could set them down for a moment, take a breather, and then pick them back up to continue moving forward. Sometimes, simply getting through the day is an achievement.

## Defining Self-Love

### A Friend's Wisdom

When I asked her what self-love meant and what it meant to be hard on myself, she explained that self-love is waking up each morning and looking for your own reflection in your phone instead of someone else's messages. It's about looking in the mirror and appreciating your beauty, which brings a genuine smile to your face. It's admiring your body during a bath, feeling comfortable in your own skin, and recognizing that this is the love you deserve.

### Embracing Solitude

It's enjoying a sunset while walking alone, accepting that this is who you want to be. It's treating yourself to your favorite meal without needing anyone else's approval. Self-love starts with small acts of kindness towards yourself, like you would for a scared, wounded child until that child grows up.

## Reclaiming Your Power

### Small Acts of Kindness

You learn to care for your body and soul, reclaim your power from family, money, jobs, and addictions. Self-love means prioritizing yourself without being selfish; it is necessary. It involves accepting your flaws and treating yourself with understanding and compassion. The negative thoughts in your mind can be countered with positive affirmations.

### Setting Boundaries

You learn to say no when needed because your love for yourself allows you to set boundaries. You forgive others, not just for them but for your own well-being, knowing that forgiveness brings you peace. You refuse to tolerate negativity; if something bothers you, you walk away. When you make mistakes, you forgive yourself.

## Building Healthy Relationships

### Seeking Genuine Connections

You seek relationships because you want them, not because you need them, and you become your own best friend. You continuously strive to become a better person, especially in terms of your character. You enjoy your solitude and don’t feel the need for constant company.

### A Life Lesson

When I asked her who taught her this wisdom, she replied that life itself was her teacher. She shared her story, starting from her early teenage years when she had intense crushes on boys that changed frequently. Although her affections were fleeting, the intensity of her feelings remained constant.

## A Shift in Perspective

### Loving Oneself

One day, amidst the emptiness between crushes, she questioned whether she had ever felt that same level of love for herself. She decided it was time to focus on loving herself rather than chasing after boys. This marked a significant shift in her perspective; she began eating well for her health rather than to impress someone else. She realized she deserved better than those who did not appreciate her, and her self-esteem grew.

### Embracing Uncertainty

Her selectiveness in relationships stemmed from self-worth rather than arrogance. She became comfortable with uncertainty, trusting her ability to handle whatever came next. Loving oneself naturally leads to believing in oneself. She recognized the importance of spending time alone to reduce distractions and truly listen to her feelings.

## Conclusion

Self-love is a journey that starts with small, deliberate acts of kindness towards yourself. It’s about setting boundaries, forgiving yourself and others, and prioritizing your well-being. Embracing self-love allows you to face life’s challenges with resilience and grace, ultimately making your journey more unforgettable.
