The Millionaire's Dilemma: A College Tale of Struggles and Surprises. Part 2
Bound by Fate: A Chance Encounter That Changed Everything
I was sitting on the university field, chatting with friends and smoking a cigarette when I suddenly heard a voice—not just any voice, but a girl's voice. I turned around and saw a girl standing there.
Me: Yes, what do you want?
The girl: I greeted you.
Me: Walaikum Assalam.
The girl: You're answering my greeting while smoking a cigarette? You must be quite a heavy smoker.
Me: Who are you?
The girl: My name is Jannatul Islam Suborna. You know Humaira Apu, right?
Me: Yes.
The girl: She told me to talk to you.
Me: Oh… Where is Humaira?
The girl: Something happened, so she couldn't come.
Me: Okay… Follow me.
Then, I took the girl to the principal’s office. After getting permission, we entered and found Rafik Sir, who was in charge of the hostel.
Sir: Oh, Arman! Why are you here, son?
Me: I came to see the principal, sir.
Sir: Okay, sit down. Who’s this girl with you?
Me: You know her better than I do.
Sir: What do you mean?
Me: You'll understand soon. Listen to what I have to say first.
Principal: Why are you so angry, Arman?
Me: Sir, the government provides funds every month, yet you all still need extra money?
Principal: What do you mean?
Me: This girl went to Rafik Sir to get a place in the hostel, but he asked for money. When she refused, he made an inappropriate offer. If this happened to your daughter, what would you do?
Principal: Arman, son, I'll handle this. Calm down.
Me: I have work to do. I'm leaving. Make sure her accommodation is free.
Principal: Alright, son.
Then, I left. Before leaving, I gave the girl my number and told her to call me if she had any problems. But I doubted she would call. I kept referring to her as "the girl," but she had such a beautiful name—Jannatul Islam Suborna.
After wandering around all day, I returned home in the evening. My sister was furious. How would I calm her down?
Me: Apu…
Sister: What?
Me: Have you eaten?
Sister: I ate cow, elephant, donkey, and dog. Want some?
Me: Yuck!
Sister: You idiot! From tomorrow, I’ll stay home too and stop going to the office.
Me: Sorry… Okay, I’ll go to the office from tomorrow.
Sister: Really?!
Me: I promise.
After dinner, I went to sleep. The next morning, I got ready and went to the office. While working, I received a call from an unknown number.
As soon as I answered, I heard,
Caller: Brother, it's Humaira. Where are you?
Me: I'm at the office. Why?
Humaira: I need to meet you urgently.
Me: Did something happen to Jannatul again?
Humaira: Yes, brother.
Me: Where are you?
Humaira: In front of the university gate.
Me: Wait for 10 minutes. I’m coming.
I took my private car and left. The traffic was terrible, so it took me 20 minutes to reach. It was my first time bringing a car to the university—I usually came by bike. As I stepped out of the car, everyone looked surprised. Without wasting time, I started searching for Humaira. Then I remembered—they were waiting at the gate.
Me: Sorry, Apu. It took a while to get here.
Humaira: Brother, why did you come from inside the university? When did you enter?
Me: I brought my car, so you didn’t notice me.
(Hearing about the car, everyone said in unison: "You have a car?")
Me: Yeah.
Humaira: The reason I called you—today, Jannatul is treating us to food.
Me: What?! You gave me so much tension for this little thing?
Humaira: Oh, really? And how worried were you exactly?
Me: Forget it. So, where are we going now?
Jannatul: Wherever we take you.
Me: Alright, madam.
Jannatul: Then let’s go.
Me: Wait, let me bring my car.
Then, I took everyone to a hostel restaurant for a meal.
As we were finishing, a guy suddenly said,
Guy: Arman Chowdhury, I didn’t know you ate at such cheap restaurants. Are you out of money or what?
Humaira: Who is that, brother?
Me: Ignore him.
Humaira: No, tell me, please.
Me: You can call him my enemy.
Humaira: Brother, how much money do you have?
Me: I don’t know exactly, but I have money in six or seven banks.
Humaira: Who’s in your family?
Me: Only my sister. No one else.
Humaira: Brother, promise me something.
Me: What is it?
Humaira: We all want to visit your house.
Me: Alright, let’s go.
Humaira: Not today—tomorrow.
Me: Okay. Where did your friend go, though?
Humaira: No idea.
Actually, Jannatul is very reserved, so she didn’t eat with us. She sat separately. But now I couldn’t see her anywhere.
Jannatul: Who are you looking for so intensely?
Me: You. Where did you go?
Jannatul: To pay the bill.
Me: Oh, I see. Now tell me…
After dropping everyone off at their hostel, I returned home. My sister hadn’t come back yet, so I called her. She said she was almost home. I freshened up, and as I came out, I saw her arriving.
Me: Apu, some of my friends will come over tomorrow.
Sister: So? Do you need my permission for that?
Me: They’re girls.
Sister: Oh… Do I have to be here?
Me: Who else will cook, then?
Sister: Alright, I’ll stay. Have you eaten?
Me: Yeah. Did you?
Sister: Yes.
Me: I’m going to sleep.
I was sleeping when suddenly my phone rang, waking me up.
Me: Who is this?
Caller: It’s Jannatul.
Me: Oh, tell me.
Jannatul: Everyone wants to visit your house tomorrow, but I have a problem…
Me: What problem?
Jannatul: Do any men live in your house?
Me: No, it’s just me.
Jannatul: Then there’s no problem. What are you doing?
Me: I was sleeping, but your call woke me up.
Jannatul: Alright, go back to sleep. But Maghrib prayer is about to start—pray first, then sleep.
Me: I’ll see…
As I was getting ready for prayer, my sister came in and said something that made me laugh. At the same time, I secretly prayed that it would actually come true…
