Sophie had always believed in fairy tales, in happy endings and in the power of love. She had found that love with Alex, the man of her dreams. They had met when they were young and had fallen madly in love. They had dated for years and then, finally, Alex had proposed. They were planning their wedding when Alex's job had forced him to move to another country. Sophie had stayed behind to finish her degree, planning to follow him as soon as she graduated.
But things didn't go as planned. Alex's job became more demanding, and he had less time to talk to Sophie. She missed him terribly, but she understood that work was important. She poured herself into her studies, hoping that her graduation would bring them closer together.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. Alex's job became even more demanding, and he had to travel frequently to different parts of the world. Sophie missed him so much, it was almost like a physical pain. She missed his touch, his scent, the way his eyes crinkled when he smiled.
As the months turned into years, Sophie found herself becoming more and more isolated. She had friends, but they couldn't fill the void that Alex had left in her heart. She tried to keep busy, to distract herself with work and hobbies, but nothing seemed to help.
One day, Sophie received a call from Alex. He was in town for a few days and wanted to see her. Sophie was thrilled, and she spent the next few days preparing for their reunion. She bought a new dress, got her hair done, and even splurged on a fancy dinner reservation.
When she finally saw Alex, she felt like her heart would burst. He looked just as handsome as she remembered, and he smelled just as good. They hugged each other tightly, and Sophie felt like she was finally home.
They spent the next few days together, exploring the city and catching up on everything they had missed in each other's lives. Sophie was happy, but there was a nagging feeling in the back of her mind. She couldn't help but wonder if things would ever go back to the way they were before.
On the last day of Alex's visit, they went for a walk in the park. Sophie held Alex's hand tightly, not wanting to let go. They sat down on a bench, and Alex turned to her with a serious look on his face.
"Sophie, there's something I need to tell you," he said.
Sophie's heart sank. She knew what was coming. She had seen the way Alex had been distant, the way he had avoided talking about their future.
"I love you, Sophie," Alex said, taking her hand. "I always have, and I always will. But I don't think I can do this anymore. The distance, the time apart... it's just too much."
Sophie felt tears welling up in her eyes. She had known this was coming, but it didn't make it any easier.
"I'm sorry, Alex," she said softly. "I love you too, but I don't know what to do."
Alex squeezed her hand. "I don't either. Maybe we need some time apart to figure things out."
Sophie nodded, tears streaming down her face. They sat there together for a few more minutes, holding hands and watching the world go by.
As Alex got up to leave, Sophie stood up too and decided to part ways as her tears pours like a river because of the pain letting someone you loved go.
