Every Single Weekend
My weekend at a wedding and Galaxy Con

What started off as a hectic preparation for a busy weekend ended as something I can only describe as a beautiful example of every single weekend. This past weekend consisted of me going to a loved ones wedding and a nerdy journey to a place that I love and cherish called GalaxyCon.
It was exactly one year ago when one of my adopted mothers from my old job, Christal, announced to me that she was getting married. I was extremely happy for her when she sent me a picture with an engagement ring on her finger. Every summer me and my best friends go to the Mecca of nerd conventions known as GalaxyCon in Raleigh, North Carolina and of course it was on our schedule to go this year. Now to be technical, taking part in all of these events are things that I should have been looking forward to beforehand, but as the last couple of months were closing in I ended up being more and more stressed thinking about them.
Nearly two months ago my adopted mama Christal asked me if I would be an usher in her wedding because her son would be away in the military during her wedding. Of course I agreed and was honored that she asked me, she’s a mother to me and it’s a joy to be there for her, but I found out at the last minute just a few weeks shy of GalaxyCon that her birthday fell on the Saturday that I was supposed to be going to GalaxyCon and being that I was committed to being in her wedding I knew I wasn’t going that day. Luckily for me GalaxyCon last four days from Thursday to Sunday so I would still be able to go the next day after the wedding, but my friends weren’t gonna be able to join me due to this change up and their schedules and this also meant I was in for a pretty busy weekend having to cram a lot in just two days.
On average this shouldn’t seem stressful. I mean worse things have happened to even me, but as I was preparing myself for these two big events both falling on the same weekend, I ran into some issues in the midst of these two events. First off I was just bouncing back from getting a new car and I also had to purchase a new phone as my old phone finally went full fledged haywire on me. As if all that wasn’t enough I also had not yet bought the suit I needed for the wedding having been extremely busy. As the week of the wedding and GalaxyCon arrived I was in a race against time.
On Thursday just two days before the wedding, I finally picked up the suit. I felt like I had just slayed one of the biggest giants of life considering how much I was stressing about whether or not I was gonna get the right suit and whether or not it was gonna cost me a fortune. When I found the right looking and affordable suit I wanted to purchase I sent a picture of it to mama Christal and she approved, so that was a relief of an objective carried out. Now all I had to do was make it to the wedding.

Saturday afternoon arrives and I make my way to the wedding and slowly but surely the stress melts away after I carry out my usherly duties. The wedding was absolutely amazing. Mama Christal looked amazing as a bride and new wife to be and she was glowing with happiness. I also spent a lot of time catching up with my old coworkers sharing war stories of the battlefield called the fast food business that we all worked in together. I also caught thee garter for the third time ever as the wedding concluded. The evening ended with music, dancing, laughter and everyone loving on each other, I’ll never forget that day.

Next up was GalaxyCon in the morning. I got up super early on Sunday so I could beat that morning traffic. I did beat traffic almost to a fault as I had just narrowly missed highway patrol catching speeders like a moth to a flame. So I made it to GalaxyCon and parked in the parking garage next to the Raleigh convention center and boy was the nerdom underway. This was the only year I didn’t Cosplay given that I had so much to do and didn’t have time to get a costume together. When I walked into the entrance of that convention center I just knew I was at home.

It was so good to be back visiting all these cosplayers and seeing all the celebrity guest who were there as everyone nerded out. The biggest highlight in all of this for me was being able to meet Mara Wilson, the actress who played Matilda Wormwood in the feature film based off Roahl Dahl’s book Matilda. She was pretty cool and it was an honor to have met her.

The convention was amazing as always and I can’t wait for it to come back next year so that I can do it all over again.

When I made it back home I spent the evening thinking about what started off as a hectic road and ended as an amazing weekend. I realized that everything I went to leading up to those two days of reckoning was all worth it and I’d definitely do it all over again if I had to, even if I don’t want to. Some weekends like this are loud, others are quiet, but when you look back on it all you realize that this chaotic, unpredictable, and beautiful mess like what became of this past Saturday and Sunday is simply the wonder of not only this weekend, but every single weekend.
