The Black Hall

Some of the creatures saw what he had written and came to him, their eyes full of fear. One had a sheet of parchment, and on it was faded writing, a list of instructions.

Bring New Souls

Or You Will Burn

They pointed to the charred piles of bones that were in blackened piles around this dismal hall. There was no exit, and the only way in was when the windows appeared, and souls were dragged in by those trying to escape.

He eyed the bones, and they could be broken and then used to cut the threads that were used to sew up their mouths. He picked up a bone and broke in in halk forming two effective blades, and started to cut the threads holding his lips together.

He could open his mouth:

"Who wants their threads cut?"

Two creatures came and he gave them the bone blades and they cut their threads too. It had been so long since they spoke their voices sounded like sandpaper.

"We have been here forever, we are charged with bringing more souls in here, we think when we are transformed into the creatures we are now, something is taken from us. Our souls maybe?"

"The voice tells us to bring the souls in and we will live, if you can call this living. Those that do not bring souls in, or refuse to partake are burned and you have seen the results in here"

"I don't know how we are nourished, but we don't eat or drink. We just keep doing what we are doing to stay alive"

He thought about this. Whatever controlled the creatures in the hall was taking something for some reason, and maybe if that could be stopped there may be a way to get out of this.

"Do you want to get out of here, at least get back to the real world?"

"We would love to, but even if we could get back, how could we go back looking like this, we are not even human"

"I may be wrong but I am sure this is just how we look when we are in here, If we smash the next window, and we don't reach out but we push someone through, that may cause a reaction. We need to change what is happening"

"If we try this, you know we might end up as a pile of bones on the floor"

"That is true, but if we can get one of us out, and effectively stop another soul being dragged in here then it will be a small victory. Are we going to do this?"

"Yes"

"Yes"

And bow others were smashing bones and opening their mouths up and there was a growing noise. They could speak again.

Then the voice came from above

"THERE IS NO ESCAPE!!!"

The flames came down, but the creatures actually avoided them. After a while the flames died down as though there was no more power and the creatures became more confident.

Then a new window appeared ......
