A single dark cloud hovered over a drought-stricken village, trembling but refusing to break. People cursed it until they learned the truth: if it rained then, the cracked earth would shatter. Sacrifices for the Balance Chapter 3: The Most Unusual Patient
[The last chapter can be found here.] Jena parked her Bug outside the Elspeth County Hospital. She clocked in and went to her assigned station. Tonight was one of her "special nights"; as a member of the coven that worked the hospital, she occasionally had to track down certain patients and look at their charts. While she loved the ostentatiousness of the limousine, it would never make it to the hidden village she was traveling to.

Sacrifices for the Balance Chapter 1: She Almost Escaped
“So how did the girl escape?” Percival Abbot inspected the cord before him. It had been cut through rather messily; apparently, she had used a small blade to saw her way out. This was interested as as the perpetrator would have most likely ensured she was disarmed. He petted one of the two large wolves surrounding him. “Yeah, makes no sense.”
