Into The Grey
What Happened?

He woke, and it seemed a bit dark; maybe he was early, or it was cloudy outside. He looked at his alarm clock, and it was blank. There must have been a power cut, but the battery should have kicked in. Maybe that needed replacing, whatever.
He picked up his phone, that was dead too. He would have to find his charger, though, if the power was out, that would not be any help.
He drank the last of the water in the glass beside his bed, then got up to have a shave and clean his teeth. The house seemed to be in a twilight, but he knew the power was out and could do this in the half-light.
In front of the bathroom sink, he could see his face in the mirror, and there seemed to be a lot more facial hair than most mornings. He turned the hot tap on. The water ran for about ten seconds and then stopped. He tried the cold tap, and the same happened. Then he tried the bath and the shower. He had no water.
What had happened?
He pulled a T-shirt and jeans on, and went downstairs to make a coffee, then remembered the power was out. He opened the fridge and it stank. Everything was rotted and sour, including the milk. That would have to be binned and cleaned.
He was getting worried, this was not the result of him oversleeping. This was serious.
The kettle was half full, so he took that upstairs to clean his teeth and get a cold wash. He didn't bother shaving. Then, some roll-on deodorant made him feel almost presentable.
He got his trainers and coat on, put his mobile phone in his pocket even though it was dead, and opened his front door, and then got another shock.
The door was blocked with a metal sheet, like they put on derelict properties.
A couple of kicks and he was able to get out, and then he got an even bigger shock.
Every door and window in the street was covered with a metal sheet, every house! There were no cars, no people, nothing. It was empty. He didn't have a car, and always used a bus, but he could not hear any traffic from the motorway; in fact, he could hear nothing. There was always birdsong, but not today, no cats wandering about, and no dogs barking.
He walked up to the main street and everything was metal-sheeted up, even the shops, the gym and the library. Nothing was open. Even the flats over the shops were sheeted up.
This got stranger by the minute.
If there had been some disaster, the authorities would not have had the resources to sheet up every building in the area, maybe in the city, so what had gone down?
He walked toward the city centre, and everything was the same. Every door and window was sheeted up, even the churches were sealed up too. He could see nowhere where sheets had been torn down, he felt like he was the last man in the world.
This was getting worse. he looked for a shop and managed to rip the sheet off and kick down the door. There were bottles of pop and water, and some unopened chocolate and biscuits. He stuffed his pockets and decided to go east and see how far the situation extended.
He had provisions, not ideal, but he was not going to starve.
He looked up. The sky was grey, but it was not cloudy; it was just like the blue had turned to grey. no birds flew, and there were no aeroplanes either.
East would take him to the airport.
He hoped to find some answers

This situation sounds really strange! I've had power cuts before, but never like this where everything seems so off. No water, a blocked door, and the whole street covered in metal sheets. Wonder what caused this? And how are the neighbors dealing with it? Gonna be a wild day trying to figure it out.
Almost like the Langoliers, except for the sheeted doors. Wonderful story, Mike
Sounds like someone has pulled the steel wool over everyone's eyes. Intriguing. Eastward-ho!
A haunting journey begins alone in a silent, sealed world, searching for answers in an abandoned reality
Omggg, like what is even happening. Waiting for part 2
Oooh this is... Eerie. I always find it creepy when cities and towns are quiet and empty
Well, you've got my interest piqued, Mike! I'll be keen to know where you're taking this!
