Small Dreams Of A Scorpion

A Book Of Poems By Spike Milligan

Introduction

I am sharing this because I mentioned it in my last book review. Spike Milligan was many things: a genius, a comic, an author, a war veteran, a poet, and more.

He also suffered from bipolar, manic depression, and serious depression, but his sense of humour and care for others shone through.

I include "Bloodnok's Rock And Roll Call" which is a record he made with the other Goons, Harry Secombe, Peter Sellers and Michael Bentine, but on to the book.

I often dip into this, though I recently read it end to end. It is only eighty-six pages and many of those are illustrations by Spike or his daughter, Laura.

Small Dreams Of A Scorpion

On the back of the book is the poem "Goliath", a great slice of comic observation, and you think this is going to set the tone of the book.

I love that poem, but the book addresses many subjects, such as his war experiences and his depression.

There are also surreal poems and other funny ones, but just as you are thinking things are lighter, he drops in a poem about the cruelty of animal testing.

Conclusion

Thank you for reading. I know this is short, but so is the book, and it should be in your collection.

This sounds like such an interesting anthology. I'm always looking for new poetry to read. I love the poem about the chair you included, and I think poetry about war experiences should be more popular because it can get REALLY deep and dark. Thanks for the recommendation!
