A Playlist

Introduction

This was inspired by an Instagram post I stole that said:

Then I thought about songs in my collection about truth and lies. I have lied a few times to get jobs, although I did have the confidence to know that I would be up to speed in a few days in the position, although I have been responsible for seeing some who had lied about their ability and then not able to do the job, out of the door.

Thinking about songs, there seem to be a lot more that reference lias and liars that truth, maybe that is just the world me live in, although the time range of these songs is fairly large.

So these are two short playlists on Truth and Lies. Here we go.

Truth

Spandau Ballet - "True"

Spandau Ballet have done some excellent songs, but this isn't one of them, it is, in my opinion very bland but obviously fits this playlist.

However PM Dawn's repurposing of it, "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss", is absolutely gorgeous. I would love to know which version you prefer.

John Lennon - "Gimme Some Truth"

Always been one of my favourites, and still always relevant, even more so today. Covered so many times by other artists, this song always stands up, both the chord sequence and vocal delivery never let up and you could imagine it being directed at almost every political figure today.

Derek and the Dominos - "Tell The Truth"

From their only album (I think), some fairly robust southern rock with Eric Clapton and Duane Allman.

Brian Eno - "The True Wheel"

I love the almost circular construction of this song and the main line:

"We are the 801, We are the Central Shaft"

I believe that the line came to Eno in a dream and is the central shaft in Geomancy which inspired the Vocal story below.

Someone pointed out that 801 Eight Naught One acrostically spells out the name ENO!!

Cyndi Lauper - True Colors

Cyndi Lauper is a wonderful artist and this is a beautiful song and has the word "True" in the title so is good for this playlist.

Madonna - "True Blue"

Forty or so years on and this still sounds excellent. A favourite of my girls when they were growing up and is probably still in their collections.

Fairport Convention - "What Is True?"

A wonderful song featuring the beautiful voice of the sadly missed Sandy Denny. This is just one of the many fine songs from the album "Rising For The Moon".

Lies

The Knickerbockers - "Lies"

What a truly awful name for a band, but the song is fine. I play this quite often because it is on the excellent Elektra "Nuggets" collection of sixties garage bands.

Flamin' Groovies - "Don't You Lie To Me"

One of the most perfect bands ever although this is a Chuck Berry cover, so a brilliant band covering a composing genius, what's not to like?

Queen - "Liar"

YOu knew this was going to be here. Heavy, and some monstrous guitar from Professor Brian May, although the quiet pieces just lull you into a false sense of security before it hits you over the ahead once again.

The Sweet - "The Lies In Your Eyes"

An excellent slice of seventies pop metal. A lot of people are shocked when they hear how metal The Sweet are. They are still around, and below is a little more of their music if you like this:

Conclusion

Seven "True" songs and five featuring "Lies". I hope you have found something you like and maybe discovered something you didn't know.

Thank you for reading and listening.

Fun playlist, Mike, though having grown up with Spandau Ballet's version, I still prefer that one.

I had never heard that Queen song, so thank you. Brian May is such a talented guitarist, and for me, the song has a smidge of Bohemian Rapsody about it in parts. Thanks, Mike. Thank you also for the tip on SoundCloud. I have successfully translated the songs into MP3 and loaded them onto SoundCloud. so now I can put the rest of the submissions together and see what happens. Would love your thoughts on the songs, but forgive the quality of the recordings.

That's a cracking idea for a playlist - recognize a lot of the songs, but not all of them. Great stuff Mike.

Great playlist, covering a wide variety of songs, Mike. Love many on it

  • It’s a reminder that understanding often requires us to question not only others’ truths but our own as well. Looking forward to reading more from you!
