Back in Time, No Auto-Tunes, No Rules, Just Jazz and New York
Walk into the right club in NYC on any given night, and you might think you’ve stepped into a different era. But listen closer, this isn’t just nostalgia, it’s a revival. Jazz in New York isn’t clinging to the past; it’s electrifying the present. While other cities let jazz slip into history books, NYC has turned up the volume. Fresh audiences are packing clubs, young artists are reinventing the sound, and the groove? It’s stronger than ever.

Killing Me Softly Showdown: Lieberman, Flack, or Fugees?
Have you ever had an earworm? A song bug that's inexplicably crawled into your head. Then it gets stuck for days? My recent earworm has been "Killing Me Softly with His Song," running around in my brain and I have no idea why. My ritual remedy is listening to the bug and researching the tune. I discovered an unexpected, tangled, fascinating backstory filled with inspiration, betrayal, and reinvention. This isn't a song; it is a journey.

Party Train by The GAP JANUARY 1, 2023, we awoke early to finish preparations for guests and our good luck New Year's Day meal for friends and family. "Party Train" by The Gap was blasting throughout the house; we danced around the kitchen while my husband prepared the meat, and we set out snacks. We had collard greens symbolizing greenbacks (folding paper money), black-eyed peas to bring wealth in coins, and lima beans and rice, our standard comfort foods for gatherings. He always makes chicken and sometimes his famous baby back ribs.

Spinning Shields
Some songs don’t just play; they grab you by the gut and squeeze. “Love Is a Shield” by Camouflage is that song for me this year. It doesn’t coddle or console. It hammers. It pulls my insides out and lays them bare. The synths rise and fall like waves, unrelenting yet strangely soothing, a mirror to the chaos and quiet of my life. It plays as I walk through the ruins of everything that was supposed to last.
