They argue it doesn’t have to be punk or anything specific; it’s just music that major labels don’t control. But I see it differently—it's way more than just being independent. Alternative rock, or alt-rock, is a genre that grew out of the underground music scene in the 1970s. At its core, alternative is a catch-all for anything that feels too "out there" for classic rock or mainstream pop.
