Juli's Playlist From Instagram

Introduction

My friend Juli is a music lover, DJ, Poet, Writer, Performer, Snake Owner, and Cat Lover and publishes playlists on Facebook.

These fifteen songs are all her choices, I have not heard any of them though I know a few of the bands so I will comment as I put this playlist together.

YouTube does not indicate where the videos are licensed to play so I try and choose the artist's or record label's channels in the hope they will be globally available.

A few of these are Bandcamp rather than YouTube links so you may have to sign up, but it is free and is good for artists. The Bandcamp links have the play button in the bottom left of the image whereas the YouTube ones are centre.

The only one of these songs I was aware of was the Jarvis Cocker one but every one is worth a listen.

Take a listen and leave comments, I'd love to hear what you think.

Thanks for this Juli.

This was the last one:

Chelsea Wolfe & Emma Ruth Rundle "Anhedonia"

This song drips darkness and the video is very disconcerting. I may have to put a warning on this playlist, but this is an amazing song.

It amazes me that from twelve basic notes, so much amazingly different music can be created.

Hellish Form - The Funeral Party (The Cure Cover)

This is monstrous, a cover of a song from "Faith" by The Cure. Almost like a monster coming to annihilate everything in its path. I love this.

Antoni Malovvi - "Dreams Inside The Witch House"

I think the title is from a short story by HP Lovecraft and the spiky violin backed by dark electronic drone does nothing to make you feel at peace. Another excellent choice from Juli.

Deathday - "Dropped Into Obscurity"

This is a little more conventional miserable post-punk reminding me of Joy Division with a motorik rhythm.

Gwendoline - Du Lundi Au Vendredi

This is a Bandcamp link so you may have to sign it. Dark electronica, and none the worse for it.

Giirls - Paralyzed

I can't find a YouTube version of this, so you may need to sign into Bandcamp to listen to this excellent piece of relentless blackness.

Roxy Music - "Chance Meeting"

From their debut, this makes me feel as though I'm on a deserted rainy beach waiting for someone who will never come. Different is style to everything by "Anhedonia" so far but this is not easy listening, but an amazing threatening soundscape.

Bestial Mouths – "Worn Skin" from "The Occult Box"

Another monstrous song, repeated echoed words over a constant drumbeat and and dark drone and clangs in the background.

Jarvis Cocker - "Fuck This" from "This Is Going To Hurt"

This is another not happy song from the BBC series "This Is Going To Hurt" which, if you are in the UK you can watch here:

Painfully funny, heartbreakingly honest – welcome to the weird world of an NHS labour ward. Ben Whishaw stars in Adam Kay's raw, ridiculous rollercoaster diary of a doctor’s life.

Factice Factory - "Tonband"

This a relentless piece of German language darkness and another perfect piece of this excellent playlist.

Grave Babies - "Haunted"

This is a measured noise attack with a reverbed voice and maybe a drop of Joy Division in the music.

La Mverte - "No Gazing!

A little more subdued than most of this playlist but the vocals add an extra layer of darkness to the electronica.

Ancien Régime - "The Phantom Chariot"

I love the echo guitar on this against the electro rhythm sections, then the vocals remind me a little of Ian McCulloch of Echo and the Bunnymen.

U.S. Girls - "I Don't Have a Mind of My Own" from "Go Grey"

I could not find Juli's suggestion for U.S. Girls which was "Piano Afternoon" so I have included this fairly muddy piece from 2010 but still more than listenable.

Figure Study - "Paralyzed"

A repeated four-note electronic motif with Nico-influenced vocals closes this extremely interesting playlist.

A haunted graveyard of familiar sounds... 🎶 😵‍💫

Lots of unsettling music here. Not something I'd listen to regularly, but some of these would have fit well on my haunted house background tape.

All I can say is interesting collection of music.
