Music Would Listen to Me
Ah, the teenage years. I’m only 19 and still listen to these songs very regularly. Music was always my self-soothe and my way of coping with my trauma. From religious, physical, sexual, mental, and emotional trauma, music was always my cure. I still use music as my self-soothe to this day.

The angels who helped me survive
For the first twelve years of life, regardless of what happens or changes in the world, a child can easily define their existence. I'm a child, or I'm a student, or I'm a dependent. Upon reaching the 13th birthday, the definition begins to get grey. They are "teenagers" at that age. Teen bodies are different than child bodies. They feel different feelings. They go through changes. The metamorphis is stressful enough, yet they still have 5 or 6 more years of formal schooling if that is the goal. They might decide to start their own family early. Sacrifice their diploma or graduation for the opportunity to be a mom or a dad or a husband or a wife. Life presents extremely difficult choices at an extremely difficult biological time. I remember it well.

A Typical Cliché
Music saved my life. I bet you read that, rolled your eyes and thought “what a cliché” but it is true. Growing up, I didn’t have the best home life and through my teenage years I ended up getting into drugs and drinking to try to cope with it. The only constant my life had with a sense of normality was music. They say that your life reflects in the music you listen to and I’m living proof of that. Every song I listened to always spoke to me in ways I couldn’t understand. With Billie Eilish becoming popular in recent years, I’d like to talk about the “sad girl” music before her that will always be iconic.

My most influential/favorite post-hardcore/metalcore bands
I was listening to music in my car the other day, and I was thinking after the death of "Extreme Thing" and "Van's Warped Tour" not too many people listen to Metalcore/Post-hardcore anymore. Probably rightfully so, but I still enjoy the feeling of blasting old my high school playlist in my car. So here are a couple bands and a few of their albums I still absolutely love to this day.

Emo Guilty Pleasures
Teen angst is defined as: “the feeling of the “ugh-I'm-so-misunderstood-what-is-life?” part of adolescence. While this coming of age emotional turmoil may seem like a drag at times, don't worry. There is a purpose and cure. By definition, angst is a feeling of anxiety about your life or situation.” and although I’m just recently out of my teens I can still relate to the idea of being misunderstood and not finding life as an easy way to deal with whatever it’s thrown at me and also by how I’ve been able to cope and/or handle all of it.

Angst Was Riding Shotgun. Third Place in Teen Angst Playlist Challenge.
Growing up, I would have never been considered a very angsty child. I followed the rules and would have definitely been called a teacher’s pet. Okay, on multiple occasions I was called the teacher’s pet. I lived a sheltered life and had very little to feel moody about. But in the summer of 2001, the state of California gave me a little card that said I was allowed to drive. And everything changed. I put on my cargo pants, slid on my Oakley sunglasses, jumped into my mom’s Ford Expedition, and hit the road. I was in the driver’s seat and angst was riding shotgun.
