A Feline Playlist For International Cat Day 2025

A Puss Related Playlist

Introduction

I couldn't find a specific International Cat Day site, so I just chose a random one to share with you.

The lead video is the brilliant Cravendale "Cats With Opposable Thumbs" advert.

I usually see a lot of cats when I am out on my walks, and even if I am not, they still come to my back door demanding treats, which to can see documentary evidence of here:

I may have done a feline-related playlist before, but I have been unable to find it, even with Vocal's excellent search engine. The link below is a page of my feline-related writings (though I wish that we could choose the image).

So Here Are A Nineteen Cat-Related Songs For Your Delight

The Coasters - "Three Cool Cats"

The cats here are three dudes looking for dates, in this funny and brilliant Leiber/Stoller song. I love the Coasters as well; the combination of them and Leiber/Stoller is a very funny treasure trove of songs.

The Aristocats - "Everybody Wants to Be A Cat"

This had to be part of this list, and the video has had seventeen million views, so I assume it has a universal license. I also have included the Electro Swing version, which is great fun too.

Gong - "Cat In Clark's Shoes"

A bit of psychedelic jazz, but don't let that put you off, featuring the excellent saxophone of Bloomdido Bad-De-Grasse (Didier Malherbe). Give it a listen, you might be impressed.

King Crimson - "Cat Food"

This eventually grows on you, but so does mould, but there is a lot of this I like, but it is challenging, and was, I believe, issued as a single and was played on Top Of The Pops. Absolute madness.

Cream - "Cat's Squirrel"

This is an instrumental. An excellent instrumental nonetheless. The meaning of the phrase from Merriam-Webster is:

The meaning of CAT SQUIRREL is a reddish-coated fox squirrel found in the eastern part of its range

I'm still no wiser

Cat's Squirrel?

Tom Jones - "What's New Pussycat"

Some sixties cheese, but Mr Jones has managed to reinvent himself several times to become a very respected artist, but this song fits the playlist bill.

The Stray Cats - "Stray Cat Strut"

This is a double win, band name and song, and this had to be included. Love this song.

"I got cat class, and I got cat style"

Janet Jackson - "Black Cat"

A slice of vicious funk from Ms Jackson. Very impressive.

"We Are Siamese (If You Please)" from Lady And The Tramp

This just came to mind and features a particularly nefarious pair of kitties.

"The Ballad Of Cat Ballou" film opening

Opening from the film starring Jane Fonda as Cat Ballou, a young schoolteacher who turns into an outlaw to avenge her murdered father, sung by Nat King Cole and Stubby Kaye.

The Cure - "The Love Cats"

A bit of gothic fun (you don't hear that phrase too often, do you?) from The Cure. Is there anything more to say about it? Brilliant.

Pink Floyd - "Lucifer Sam"

I loved this when I first heard it with its brilliant descending riff, and the video by Effervescing Elephant (named after another Syd Barrett song) is brilliant too.

Dave Gilmour - "Black Cat"

A short instrumental from the new album, which sounds more than a little threatening.

Evul Ded - "Black Cat Strut"

This may be AI-generated according to the YouTube blurb, but it is an excellent slice of rockabilly. I would say it is too precise for AI, but I might be wrong.

Conclusion

Thank you for reading and listening, and I hope you enjoyed this.

Addendum

I shared this in the progressive music group "In the Court - Prog and Beyond", and a few members suggested these songs that I missed.

Van Der Graaf - "Cat's Eye/Yellow Fever"

Both threatening and gorgeous in parts, a brilliant song.

Genesis - "All In A Mouse's Night"

About a cat's prey so with the lines below it is worth including.

Suddenly he bumps into fur, that's very unwise,

A cat is much quicker than men and their eyes.

The chase that ensues can have only one end,

Unless outside help steps in for our friend in need.

But now the cat comes in for the kill,

His paw is raised, soon blood will spill, yes it will.

Porcupine Tree - "Nine Cats"

A band I don't know that well, but this is a worthy listen.

Gentle Giant - "Black Cat"

Gentle Giant's tunes are often complex but still very listenable, and this is another great one.

What a great list you shared here. My favorite will also be the one from 'Lady and the Tramp and every once in a while, I still hum that song and remember the scene too. The Aristocats was also a good one. What about the song 'Cats in the cradle' not the title but a line in the song. My mom liked Tom Jones 'What's new pussycat?'

I didn't know there was an International Cat Day. I also didn't know there were so many cat related songs!

Fabulous list of songs gosh some I haven’t heard since I was in my teens love this one Mike 🦋💙🦋😊

  • International CAT day? I will make a point to congratulate the stray who pops by for mice and sometimes hides in my barn today. Your playlists always take me back to my youth. I love the Stray Cats and haven't listened to one of theirs in years. I shall make listening to old tunes my other goal ( accompanying reading more on Vocal)- Funny about "so does mould" in regards to grow on you. 😆. Cheers!

  • Great list! Love Cats is always the song that comes to my mind. On the classic hits radio I listen to almost every Friday they also play Friday I'm in Love and of course, Mr Blue Sky on rainy days, which cats wouldn't like very much.
