My Oma was not the most affectionate person, but she loved me. She lived in this turn-of-the-century apartment building with creaky doors and drafty windows. She had lived there pretty much her whole life, ever since she married and got widowed later in life.

My Dog Sages
I am so tired. How much longer can I do this? I get up every night, reposition their bodies, help them drink water, and take a pee break. I clean up poop, wipe them clean, and try not to freak out when I hear them moan from pain. When I hear the cries, I fly out of bed, no matter how deep my sleep is.

My Holy Places
When I was little, one of my favorite places was the big cathedral in my hometown. Yup, that’s right. Let me explain. I grew up Catholic. It was not an extreme version of Catholicism but a way of life. Nobody questioned it. People were born and raised that way and lived in their Catholic parish; many lived there until they died.
