Poet’s Notes: This sonnet is born from the experience of having an abusive ex invade my life in the most personal way, stealing my phones and sending cruel messages to my friends and family. The damage this caused was immense and lingers to this day. Amid the chaos, I hold onto the memory of my father, who passed away after we reconciled and became best friends again, and the light of forgiveness that slowly mends what was broken. The poem reflects the tension between anger, helplessness, and the choice to focus on love and hope for the future.

This morning around 3 a.m., I experienced something I know many of you may have also faced at one point in your life: a sleep paralysis attack. It is a strange and frightening experience where you are caught between sleep and waking, aware of what is happening but unable to move. I felt the heaviness press down, almost like a rugby team pinning one player to the ground. For a couple of minutes, it tried to keep me silent, but even before my mind fully woke, my spirit had already begun to pray. My mouth moved on autopilot, praying in the Spirit, reaching for God in that shadowy moment.

July 2029 had arrived over London like a gray flame. The city felt smaller, heavier, as if the air itself had thickened. Streets once crowded with tourists and chatter now echoed only with the footsteps of the few who remained. Airports operated at half capacity, a ghostly hum of machines and departing flights. Foreign nationals, anxious and wary, had returned to their countries in waves. Embassies posted terse bulletins, urging their citizens to leave while they still could. The United Kingdom had become a solitary island in a world that had once regarded it as central, now watching it with suspicion.
