You’ll Never Believe Who I Talked To Today
The year was 2011 I had recently inherited a …sum …of money, it wasn't so much that I was gloriously rich, in fact to some people I suppose it would've been a generous contribution to their savings. To me, however, having grown up low income in a middle class neighborhood, it seemed like ALOT of money; for the same reason, I had the money management skills of a large, overripe spaghetti squash. Granted, there were certain things I really did need, the 42-inch tv I bought from Walmart to replace the 20-inch, 15-year-old tube tv that sat in my rented single room was one, clothes were another. There were things I didn't need, 8-hour writing sessions with Chardonnay and ham sandwiches at the local art cafe, for instance. I also didn't necessarily need to keep my friends fed with fast food for 3 months. There were some good times too though, and one mortifying moment that I think about at an unhealthy frequency of about once a week.

Escape
Deer Crossing, Minnesota, the name given to a town with a face only a mother could love. A vile-smelling slaughterhouse was the highlight of the west side, a highway that offered rapid escape was the highlight of the east side, that was where highway 55 cut through town, within 5 minutes it would take you directly to Robbinsdale. Before the internet, it was the only way to get anything that wasn't available at the town's 3 stores. It went without saying that a grocery store, hardware store, liquor store, bar and Baptist church served the needs of the town's 1002 residents. But if you want any cool clothes or good comics you have to go to the city. Fine, there was one clothing store in town, Gena May's, but it was really more of a swap meet for old folks to trade their rags, everybody knew old Gena only had a few years left, that was the town's way of chipping in.

Sometimes as I approached the table I could already feel his order coming, for 10 years he had occupied the same table every morning between 11:00 and 11:45. He ordered the exact same thing every time. That’s 3,650 times he sat in that seat, 3,650 times he ate the exact same meal. Harold was not a man who had made his life from shortcuts and he was not someone who tolerated people who did. Even his order had to be placed in full...one time 5 years earlier in '77 a well-meaning waitress had brought his order back to the kitchen when she saw him come in. She poured his coffee and left it at the table, Harold sat in front of the cup for 10 minutes until she brought his order out. "what is this!?" demanded Harold "it's your order" said the young woman "you must be mistaken because I didn't order anything" he countered. The whole place watched as she was forced to take the order back and have the exact same thing remade, then as the line re-cooked his meal, the outcome they had all predicted, the young girl was subject to an angry lecture on how such efforts to suck up only lead people to think less of you, in the 10 minutes it took to make his order she had been broken down completely.

2020 was a heck of a year for most people, truth be told it was unlike anything any of us had ever seen, for many people it was a year of solitude, uncertainty, and longing. For me it was the year I finished school, the year I started this blog, and the year I told my family that I’m a lesbian. While many found solidarity in the idea that everyone was also, to varying degrees, affected by the same force. Still, there were times when we had nowhere to turn but music. AC/DC's PWR/UP Album Review
Powering Up Again AC/DC is a band that will soon embody the Ship of Theseus (or grandfather’s axe, if you prefer). I have my own theories on what the future of the band might hold as time is clearly winding down for them. Of course, I'm not positing that the end is near to try and be cynical, but Brian Johnson is the oldest person in the world doing what he does, unless you qualify Yoko Ono as a heavy metal rock star. Unless you believe Johnson, who has nearly been forced into retirement, at least once by medical issues, is immortal than modern medicine all but guarantees that the countdown is on. With that said it’s easy to swap realism for ageism, and simply write them off - I don't think that’s necessarily fair to do but it isn’t something that can be neglected as we get ready to delve into this album, afterall it was Kenny Rogers who said:

The Hoff Gets Heavy on New Metal Album
Dave of all trades David Hasselhoff is probably best known to American audiences as Michael Knight in Knight Rider or Mitch Buchannan in the 90’s bro-hit Baywatch. Younger Amerian audiences may have also gotten to know him as a judge on America’s Got Talent from 2006 - 2009, but to European audiences, particularly those in Germany and Switzerland, he is something of a rock and roll sensation. The Hoff’s illustrious musical career began in 1983 with the release of a single titled “I Get The Message”, this was followed by 1985’s Night Rocker a full-length album that went #1 in Austria. Hasselhoff would go on to release another 13 studio albums, 12 compilations, and 47 singles, most of which would see little limelight stateside but nearly every single one would chart in Austria, Switzerland, or Germany.

The Band, The Legacy Like many people AC/DC was pretty special to me throughout my life, growing up my father would blast Bon Scott era classics like “Big Balls” and eventually the Back in Black album, which was still a relatively new addition to their catalog when we got it for $1 from Columbia House. I would inevitably become a wild and unruly teenager, shotgunning wine coolers to Stiff Upper Lip and knowing that I had all of life figured out (SPOILER ALERT: I did not).
