Doug Gray Talks Marshall Tucker and Soul of the South and His Long Career
Image: NELO Mijangos The Marshall Tucker Band first got together in the early 70s—absent of anyone actually named Marshall Tucker. The impetus for a name occurred when original members Tommy Caldwell, Paul T. Riddle, George McCorkle, and Jerry Eubanks were rehearsing at an old warehouse in South Carolina. Not so much an urgent search for an identity as it was to fill their stomachs. Overdue for dinner, they abruptly settled on the name they found on the key that opened the building. 40 years later, and after hits like "Fire on the Mountain" and "Can’t You See," the legacy is not going anywhere, but only Doug Gray remains.

Jen Clarke’s Evening of Drummers Rocks to the Beat in Shenorock
Last Saturday Night, Jen Clarke held her annual Evening of Drummers at the Shenorock Clubhouse. The format had the background music and vocals blaring in range from Led Zeppelin, Greenday, Van Halen and Blink-182. But it was the beat her students filled in that rattled the beams. The elevated pride of family members couldn’t be missed either among the revelry.

Presentation at White Plains Library Documents Germany’s Official Remembrance Policy of the Holocaust
The genocide of Jews in Germany is certainly not unique in world history. The Rape of Nanking, Rwanda, and Manifest Destiny tally a short list that the perpetrating nations would officially like to forget. But in that aspect, Germany stands alone. So the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center in Purchase offered a presentation last Thursday at the White Plains Library to acknowledge the manner in which the atrocity is remembered as policy by a nation.

My Favorite 'Star Trek' Movie Scenes from the Original Cast
'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' I love Star Trek : The Motion Picture, and the disembark from dry dock always blows me away. In 1979, the ole NCC proudly flashing its titanium left us a gasp. The lighted view, over the new score, gave us the time to pause and take in the Enterprise like we never had before. But what really does it for me is the way TMP feels like a TOS episode, and it begins with Kirk. In later installments, Kirk feels more like a consensus builder who rises only slightly above that of co-leader. In TMP, Kirk commands, and there’s no discrepancy.

Fox Lane Graduate Brings Soldier Stories Back to Somers Intermediate School
Last Tuesday, Fox Lane High School graduate Jonathan Kelton spoke and presented a slide show before 150 5th graders at the Somers Intermediate School. A lieutenant in the special forces, his unit patrols the border of Pakistan and lays artillery fire to help suppress enemy insurgency into Afghanistan. Not mincing words, the 24 year old Ranger summed up in plain language what the U.S. presence means to the local people.
