When Tragedy Was Popular
In the 1950s and the 1960s tragedy was popular and there were many songs written about the trials and tribulations of teenagers. Death played a major role and the songs were sung with feeling and passion making their listeners sigh and cry. Many of the songs have heart-wrenching words and lovely melodies. However, I always found it odd to slow dance to a song telling the story of someone dying tragically. Let’s take a look at what all the crying was about.

Air Supply How the Music Began
An odd name to choose but Air Supply was a soft rock band formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1976. Their line-up has changed many times but two standard members of this group are Graham Russell (acoustic guitar, lead and harmony vocals, songwriter) and Russell Hitchcock (lead and harmony vocals). Despite the fact that at any one time they could be a whole band, a great deal of the time Air Supply sang as a duo.

For the Love of Penguins
A great penguin movie featuring real penguins is called Mr. Popper’s Penguins starring Jim Carrey. The movie is based on a children’s book by the same name. It is about a divorced businessman who inherits six penguins and winds up turning his New York City apartment into a winter wonderland for the penguins. This movie used real Gentoo Penguins and was filmed on a refrigerated soundstage. Gentoo penguins have a wide white stripe stretching like a bonnet across the top of their heads. When they reach adulthood these penguins stand at a height of 51 to 90 cm (20 to 36 in) which makes them the largest penguins outside of the two giant species: The Emperor Penguin and the King Penguin. One of the reasons I especially want to see this film is because one of my all-time favorite actresses is in the cast, Angela Lansbury, in the role of Mrs. Van Gundy. I also enjoy the antics of Jim Carrey who was super in the film The Mask.

Delicious and Different Egyptian Cuisine
Egyptian cuisine offers food that's mostly grown or available in Egypt. The food here is a culinary adventure and a real taste treat. Egyptians in Egypt eat really well and nutritious. Meat is normally roasted or grilled, whole or ground, and the main meat choices are chicken and lamb. There are a lot of cows, but mostly they are used to help out on the farms.

Gary Puckett and the Union Gap
Another American rock group which came on the scene in the late 1960s was Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. This band was set apart from other bands due to their music. They had songs which had a combination of great singing and music and touched the heart in many different ways. Their songs are still popular to this day and can be heard over the radio. From the very beginning, they were known as The Union Gap featuring Garry Puckett, and later on with only Puckett’s name in front. I can honestly say that their incredible music took me in my teen years from being a young girl to becoming a woman.

The Tide Is High with Blondie
This band had everyone dancing and singing along. Blondie is an American rock band which was established by singer Deborah Harry and guitarist Chris Stein. They were looked upon as pioneers in early new wave and punk music in America. The band mixed up the sounds of pop, disco, rap, and even reggae. It was actually the Mercer Arts Center music scene that inspired Chris Stein to form the band and Debbie Harry had previously been a member of a folk-rock band called Wind in the Willows.

The Romance of 'Ghost'
I remember the first time I saw the movie Ghost. Right away, it reminded me that I have very close ties with the world beyond, as all members of our family had. I have seen, heard and felt spirits. It has been a really good feeling knowing that there is so much more to life than what we know and see. You cannot imagine how wonderful it is to hear a voice that is dear and familiar to you whispering your name—and knowing that even though they have crossed over they are still nearby. I have read, and also believe, that there is that threshold somewhere just beyond our reach that separates our world from the next.
