Rachel Reviews: A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains by Isabella L. Bird
I would urge all young women (and men) to read this book, as Isabella is a remarkable woman and this is a remarkable book. The book is made up of a collection of letters written by Isabella to her sister, chronicling her time travelling around the Rocky Mountains. This may not seem overly intrepid, until you realise that this was written in the 1800s and Isabella was embarking on this adventure solely, her only consistent companion a horse called Birdie, who serves her exceptionally well in extreme conditions.

Two Weeks of a Lady's Life in the Dramatic Landscapes of Colorado and Utah
Author's note: The title of this travelogue was inspired by Isabella Bird, whose book accompanied me on some of the days of this trip. She was a remarkable woman and you can read about her here:

He also knew that it was not the approach of the furred ones with the claws and long teeth that sometimes threatened him or he sometimes threatened too. While his fire burned, he was safe.

Wedding Night
I loved her. I couldn't help it. I was desperate that night. It reduced me to becoming a voyeur. Just a little peek. She was beautiful as a bride and I desired her intensely as always. When I saw them leave the reception, I followed. After this, I vowed, I would stop and put her behind me.
