Party Animal
Hudson was outside, staring at the vultures. Look, I don’t really care for dogs. But now that we’ve got a proper collar on it, and the proper spells, it can’t harm us. We hope. Hudson can come and go as it pleases, but the Magi-Flee barrier on all the doors prevent its carrying any creepy crawlies into the house. And considering how insistent Hudson has been, going in and out, the place smells like lavender all the time.

The Hunger Stone
It was the worst drought that we had known in living memory. Da’s harvest was dead on the stalk, and he’d harvested it early solely for what little fodder he could salvage. Our village wasn’t rich enough for cows, but everyone was eyeing the goats. If any showed signs of sickness, they were immediately slaughtered and eaten.

I used to paint. I used to have hobbies, friends. A life. But I knew he wouldn’t stop hitting me, so I left. I could put up with the rages. It was kinda comforting, in a way. Just like my dad all over again, so I mostly ignored it. But I told him after the first hit that it was his once. He’ll never get another. Well, that promise lasted exactly till the next paycheck, and the bender that came with it.

My sister was getting the party again. Best of everything. Sweet sixteen, right? New phone, new computer, even a fucking brand new car. Her choice of flavor for the cake, no matter that I was allergic to it. Money lined up in all those fancy envelopes from all the relatives.
