Kashmir’s bloodstained meadows: Can the SCO show a road to reconciliation?
On April 22, 2025, the idyllic meadows of Pahalgam in Kashmir turned into a killing field. Twenty-six tourists—fathers, sons, dreamers—were gunned down by militants claiming allegiance to the Resistance Front, a shadowy group India links to Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba. India retaliated by suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, a lifeline for Pakistan's agriculture, while Pakistan closed its airspace to Indian flights and expelled diplomats. Nuclear arsenals loom; rhetoric hardens. Yet, amid this storm, a fragile olive branch emerges: Iran, reeling from its own tragedy—a port explosion in Hormozgan that killed at least 28 and injured 800—still urges dialogue, quoting 13th-century Persian poet Saadi, "Human beings are limbs of one body / Created from the same essence."

LlamaCon 2025: Meta challenges OpenAI with open-source AI vision
Meta has used the stage of its inaugural LlamaCon to draw a clear line between its open-source AI philosophy and the more closed, proprietary approach used by OpenAI. At the inaugural LlamaCon, a new event dedicated to developers building with the company's open-source AI models, Meta has unveiled a series of major product updates and strategic partnerships. With over a billion downloads of its Llama models and a growing global community of developers, Meta is now positioning Llama not just as a powerful alternative, but as the foundation of a decentralised future for artificial intelligence (AI).Unveiled at the event, the new Llama API offers developers many of the conveniences associated with commercial platforms like OpenAI's, including interactive model playgrounds, one-click API access, and SDKs for Python and Typescript. But unlike its rival, Meta insists on flexibility that developers retain full control of their models and weights, with no data retention for training purposes, according to Meta. Models built using the Llama API are portable and can be hosted anywhere which is a sharp contrast to OpenAI's closed ecosystem.
