When Your Mind is Your Own Enemy. Content Warning.
It all started at the beginning of 2013, during my last semester of high school. The symptoms had been present for years, but I ignored them as much as possible until it became too difficult to ignore. I felt as though a weight was pressing down on my chest and like I was no longer in control of my own mind. I felt never-ending exhaustion, and I found myself more prone to getting emotional easily. I was no stranger to this level of sadness, but I always chalked it up to other factors in my life causing me to feel that way.

Beyond the Lavender Skies
Every night at midnight, the purple clouds came out to dance with the blushing sky. Very few were able to witness such a beautifully unusual sight, but Violet was fortunate enough to be one of them. Every now and then, she would sneak out of her window when she was sure her family was asleep and tiptoed through the glistening emerald-green grass and crawled underneath the dampened, moss-covered rocks until she reached the field with the lavender skies.

He's Just Being Friendly
Alyssa was walking home from her best friend’s house through dark and mostly empty streets. She was wearing baggy grey sweatpants, a bulky winter coat, and worn-out sneakers. Her eyes were glued to her phone, her crimson hair was draped over her dull grey eyes, and she had her headphones on with her music on full blast. A man was walking behind her, but she did not notice the various obscenities and derogatory remarks he was yelling at her due to the volume of her music. It was not until she felt someone’s presence almost directly behind her that Alyssa finally turned around. She jumped in horror as she noticed a slightly older man behind her. He was bald, had a dark beard, and eyes that were yellow with dark pupils. He had on a baggy red hoodie and ripped blue jeans. When Alyssa turned around, he smiled at her. When he opened his mouth to smile, it was revealed that his teeth were perfectly white.

Moving On
I glanced at the glass of Merlot before me. The glass was half empty, which I carefully sipped. I glanced around, looking for any signs of Sean. According to his profile, he was 6’2, slightly buff, and had a cleft chin. In almost every photo on his profile, he was wearing a suit. He was certainly a workaholic, and a CEO at a big-shot company of some sorts in midtown Manhattan. His thin lips were always curled into a smirk, and his dirty blonde hair was often slicked back with gel. There was nothing about Sean that particularly stood out to me aside from the fact that he was the only one from the hundreds of DMs I received on Tinder that didn’t ask if I was “DTF” or verbally assault me for specifying in my profile that I was seeking something long-term. I was also slightly drawn to his mysterious demeanor and the sense of shyness detected in the way he spoke.
