Women in Music
The music industry has historically underrepresented women. A recent study reported that 21% of all artists are women, 12% are songwriters and only 2% of producers are women. We had the pleasure of recently interviewing one woman making waves and standing out in a major way. She goes by Kira Deevah and she’s by far one of the hardest working women we’ve met.

Modesty is Empowering
The term modest fashion or modest dressing often refers to a fashion style where women wear less skin-revealing clothes, especially in a way that satisfies their spiritual and stylistic requirements for reasons of faith, or personal preference. While modesty is seen by some as an old-fashioned concept it’s actually still widely celebrated and embraced by many. At its core, modesty is beautiful and empowering. Yes empowering! Simply put women have options in what they decide to wear and how much they want to show or not show.

The Pivot of the Beauty Industry
The global hair care market size was estimated to be around 75.06 billion in 2020. The global impact of COVID-19 has been unprecedented and the beauty industry was greatly affected. According to McKinsey, 58% of Black-owned businesses were at risk of financial distress compared to 27% of white-owned businesses pre-pandemic, and the pandemic increased that gap. Between February and April 2020, 41% of Black-owned business ended up closing. The pandemic's impact on Black women entrepreneurs was even greater. One report from Digital Undivided, showed that 98% of Black women entrepreneurs reported their business being directly impacted by Covid-19 and 82% reported experiencing a loss in revenue. Those are devestating numbers but many beauty experts and salon owners were able to pivot and are thriving even after the initial negative impact of the pandemic.

Let’s Talk About It:
Intimate skin problems are very common and can be distressing and embarrassing. These issues can interfere with a woman’s self-image and interpersonal relationships. Studies have shown that intimate area hyperpigmentation is seen equally in men and women. The genitals have an increased number of melanocytes, the cells that produce the skin pigment melanin. Hormones and factors such as friction can contribute to skin darkening. While these issues are common, it is not common for women to talk about them even amongst themselves. Darkening of the skin of the intimate area is nothing to be ashamed of. One woman looking to create a comfortable environment for women to speak freely about these issues is beauty expert and esthetician, Jamie Gill.

National Cleaning Week
It’s almost National Cleaning Week! It begins every year on the fourth Sunday in March. It is a week-long lineup of activities targeted to encourage everyone to clean their homes, closets, cars, storage units, and work spaces. I love that there is a week dedicated to bring awareness to the importance of cleanliness. While we all know that clean spaces look nice, there are additional benefits to being in a clean environment. Keeping your home clean and engaging in the cleaning process is good for you. In fact, research shows that cleaning—or the lack of cleaning—can have a direct impact on mental health. A 2010 study conducted at the University of California, Los Angeles, observed that those who believed their home was dirty or cluttered had higher levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. Another study published in "Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin," found that women who described their living spaces as cluttered or full of unfinished tasks were more likely to be fatigued and depressed than women who described their homes as restful and restorative.

The Connection Between Art and Mental Health
We all know that art is beautiful and has a positive affect on mental health. Today we dig a little deeper and get into how much of an affect it truly has. A pandemic Social study led by Dr. Daisy Fancourt of the University College of London, has tracked arts participation and mental health in a group of 72,000 adults aged 18 and older. Her data suggests that people who have spent 30 minutes or more each day during the pandemic on arts activities have lower reported rates of depression, anxiety and overall satisfaction with life.
