Do You Really Want to Read That?. Top Story - October 2023.
I seem to have missed something very important. You have noticed that my other pieces this week have been stories about the shenanigans – a wonderful word, I think – in both Canada and the United States with the Speakers of our respective Houses (ours was chosen after a quick vote; the one down south does not really exist yet, and may not exist for quite some time). I commented to a reader of my piece on how the Republican Party seems to be akin to a pack of dogs that are just on the edge of becoming feral. This is fair. My other work involved poetry, a short story, but also, I decided to repost two particular pieces about this week’s other big news: the Nobel Prizes. Physics, Chemistry and Medicine have been covered so far, and this article will be published after the prize for Literature is handed out on Thursday…unless there is another delay as there was in the year that Bob Dylan became a laureate. Anything is possible (Jon Fosse anyone?)

Week VII: Midterm Muses
Note: I have been distracted with the exams and other work I have had to give this past week, so, this is kind of a cheat. It is series of haikus based on the excuses given by a set of students who missed part of their exams (and no, they were not allowed in).

Medical Report: J. & J.
Note: This story is part of the Vocal + Assist on Facebook Lost in a Story Challenge You see a lot of horrible things on the night shift – stabbings, burn victims, all those ‘accidents’ with vegetables – but even for me this was a new one.

National Coffee Day!
You knew that I was going to write about this one, didn’t you? You knew that this one is right up my particular alley… I heard that Friday, September 29, 2023, was going to be the official National Coffee Day in North America (there is also the International Coffee Day on October 1st, and I will write a little more about the java joy to come). And I was ready for it.

Death: A Love Story?
As many of you long-time readers know, it was recently my birthday. In my piece “50”, I talked about how I did not feel any different about the turnover. I did not feel like I had crossed a line. It was just another day for me – work, exercise, and the like – and I did nothing special…except have a video call with the family. They made sure that I got to see the cake that I would never taste, with the candles indicating my incredible age. My brother bothered me again about his devotion to the Toronto Maple Leafs (“This is the year!” – right…); my nephew and niece missed me; and my mother enjoyed a bit of wine. Maybe a little too much…

50
Fifty years old... I have decided to actually just sit and write here and then finish this on my actual birthday (from Sunday to Monday). My family will be speaking to me after work, and I also have no intention of discussing my special day with the people at the college (they can give me a gift, but that's it). This is all about my feelings about my day.
