DROPLETS
SO IT SWUNG from her neck, an entire universe in a droplet of moisture kept in Marcie’s locket. She looked across at the brat of a kid swinging hard next to her on the swing set and turned her nose up at him. She wanted the boy to see she’d ignored him on purpose.

JUST BECAUSE THE EARTH STOPED SPINNING
Just because the world stops spinning doesn't mean we have to die. I don't know about you, but I'm a fighter when it comes to my life. Take for example my good neighbor Boston Earl. The old prick is ninety-one, but he ain't given up either. When the water ran out last we for nearly half the block, old Earl got out his old Ford truck of his, which still had gas in it, and we drove for nearly half a mile to a water pumping station where they was handing out bottled water and letting use fill up tubs and buckets and he and I loaded on as much as his truck can carry, and came back and passed it out to all the kind folks.

HUNGRY
Every great event has a start date. I was thinking about this as Romie and I rummaged through the maggot- ridden garage bins for something to eat. We hadn't eaten in days, and my blurred vision is a witness to that. I can stand going for a few days without sleep, even a day or two with very little to drink--in the way of liquor, that is. I got to have water, regularly--but food, when a man is deprived of something to eat, well, that's when his animal instincts take over, and you might go hunting for anything--even another person, if need be, to eat. Some people we’ve come across have rare taste for various things. One guy and his family we met was traveling on the off roads going from farm to farm. They’re looking for horses and other farm animals. Thankfully, they hadn’t allowed themselves to go for humans yet. But I’ve been tempted. Mind you, I’ve been hungry from day one. I've come close to it--to eating Romie. She's looked mighty yummy to me at times over the past few months and weeks since the world shut down. But no, I couldn't eat her, she's my best pal--right?

AND THE RIVERS RAN DOWN TO THE SEA
JOHNNY CARL SAT totally immersed in the book while reading and didn’t see Jolyn come in. For a moment, the sixteen-year-old sat watching her big brother. What was he reading? The little black notebook looked odd—no, not odd in the way it was strange, just odd in that its cover had no markings and seemed more of a dairy than something printed. The girl’s curiosity got the best of her.

BIG MAMA GAVE ME A FISHING POLE
If you try, you probably can recall many fun memories others might take delight in hearing. Here's one of mine. This was many years ago when I was a child. I can still remember the pleasant smell of the old house--my grandmother's place. It reminds me of the many awesome meals she cooked for us there and the joy we had each time we visited her. Her name was Pearl but we called her Big Mama, and Big Mama loved to fish.

To Touch the Face of God
I WENT UP the stairs ahead of the others, so fired up to see what lay ahead. The three students with me were younger than me, much younger, but I ran on ahead of them up the thousand narrow steps to the top of the temple where they told us the monks were waiting. I was anxious to see them. I'd been told about this place from friends who'd visited similar temples across China. So this was my first time to see one and I could hardly wait.
