A Hispanic Irishmen's Revelation of Food History: Part II
A family secret recipe that I have often wondered just how secret and just how rare it possibly could be, “Mine es mejor,” is what I have grown accustom to hearing. It’s a single sentence with a perfect compliment of English and Spanish. A complimentary tactic my mother would employ in her cooking as well. Butter only goes with crumbs, salt only goes with the wet, seasoning only goes with the tender. But mostly it was because mejor translates to best, and if you have been around Dominicans long enough you would know that words with the letter “s” towards the end of them are just unfathomable to them.

“Always put la sal in before la pimienta.” it was apparently a secret that no one knew but my mother since she would often assert this piece of useful information in a half-baked sentence that somehow combined both English and Spanish. Apparently food has a better relationship with salt than they do with pepper which is why you would pour in salt to get it sweet before you upset it with pepper. At least that was the explanation my mother would give, albeit an explanation in English and Spanish.

When I was a kid, before I even opened my eyes to wake up, I’d hear the crackling and sizzling sounds of a few strips of bacon being fried in a pan. I knew it was only a matter of time before the smell of hickory glory was going to reach the air around me. There is no better way to wake up than to the sound and smell of some mouthwatering bacon in the morning. To think that it was a scent becoming less and less frequently is to deny a sense of life itself.

Our favorite billionaire playboy by day and caped crusading vigilante by night will always have a special place in our pop culture history for now and for years to come. It is a story of vengeance and moral ambiguity that most are protective of and willing to pounce at those who intend to change its origins. This is probably the root cause of all the issues that the new Ben Affleck solo Batman movie is having. It is a profoundly effective superhero genre with a cultural phenomenon following behind a multitude of interpretations and ideas that it becomes somewhat difficult to settle on just one.

When Did Horror Become Mainstream?
“What is love, but a kind of creature waiting to be unbound? A malady. What does it bring any of us but…confusion and bedevilment?” says the prolific Dr. Victor Frankenstein on the gothic galore series Penny Dreadful. Gothic fiction will always have a place in our obsessions. Something about death, tragedy, horror, and batsh*t craziness is far too intriguing to pass up. Penny Dreadful reveled in these gothic fiction tropes while also reintroducing some of the most iconic characters that gothic fiction has to offer. A fraternized hyperbole of characteristics that range from madness, mystery, the supernatural, and, of course, creatures; these are the four legs that make the gothic fiction genre stand nice and tall.
