Steps
"Six-thousand eighty-three... Six-thousand eighty-four... Six-thousand eighty five..." The pavement had long lost all feeling for Edward's feet. At some point the thought had occurred to him that he used to be concerned with what shoes he was wearing, but even that seemed like ages ago now. The highway was a straight shot south and had no visible twists or turns as far as he could see. He found that counting his steps made time pass with much less effort, and at any rate most of his thoughts had dried up some time ago. Fields of wheat swayed in the breeze around him.

Sun and Rain
I have a friend who recently acquired a collection of succulents. They're known for having "modest requirements" but like any plant they can change their minds at any time and start going downhill. She was discouraged to find they were shedding leaves not long after she got them and reached out on social media for help.

Green Tea
"What's that smell?" asked Elsa. "Don't ask questions you don't want answers to." replied James. It was one of the only things left in the house. The first things to depart were the little things, the valuables, all the various this and thats that were claimed. Next went the furniture. After that, all the junk, the memorabilia, the little notepads and sentimental things that meant the world to one person and were incomprehensible to the next. What remained were squares of dust on the carpet, little knicks and scratches on the doorframes, the breeze gently rustling the curtains, the space left by a couple decades of memories.

Daryl and the Barn Owl
Are you a pleasant person? No? Oh my, okay-- no need to be so aggressive about it. If you happen to know any pleasant people, they might be a lot like Daryl Dimpies: A thoroughly polite and charming individual, soft-spoken, gives to charities, tips well, flosses regularly and compliments often. Daryl was mostly well-liked in his community (with the exception of some perpetually fussy grouch-boxes) and enjoyed stopping by his local coffee shop in the mornings or evenings.
