My Quest for the fleeting one
I asked mama for a new toy She said I couldn’t have one I asked her why and she looked at me And said you were not there I asked daddy for a new shoe My old one was far too small He said I had to make it do Because you were not there I went to school one morning I was sent right home again When I asked them why I couldn’t stay They said I didn’t have you So I sought you, I searched for you In open arenas and in secret places I called your name, and shouted at you But you seemed like a shadow without form When I imagined I had found you I suddenly found I had lost you Whenever I managed to grab you You slipped out like a slippery frog Then one day, under a gnarled old tree I sat to muse and weep At how deceitfully you treat me Then He came, and sat by me He took my hands in His’ He looked me in the eyes Then in a whispery voice, Fainter than the wind, He spoke to me: I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life That which you seek will come to you If you turn from it and seek after Me For I am the Author of all good I know that you need all these good things I desire that you have to all you need It is my wish for you to enjoy your time on earth I need you to see my love for you The gold you seek, I made it The beautiful shiny silver, it’s all Mine The cattle on a thousand hills The buffaloes and a billion bees The beauty of nature all clothe in trees I made it all for you Life does not have to be a drudgery It doesn’t have to stink You do not have to be a slave To something so mundane Trust in Me and follow my Ways Let me guide you through the path All my way are pleasantness And all my paths are peace I closed my eyes and leaned back my head I pondered on His Words I have tried my ways they did not work There was nothing more to loose So I gave up all I thought I knew And put my hand in His I’m now surrendered to do His will As difficult as it seems He led me down to simpler paths Where gentle streams flow by He took my eyes off earthly goals And showed me who I was His paths are paths of righteousness He provides all I need And when I come where crossroads lie His gentle voice guides me I may not have all I dreamed off But I have all I need And above and beyond my earthly needs My heart is full of peace I no longer pursue after you mammon He gives me what I need So now you seek me, you pursue me Sometimes I say no to you And most importantly, I am glad That I own you, without you owning me Because though you are a pleasant servant When a master, you are malevolent When all is said and done on earth I shall be glad to leave you behind It pleases me to imagine that You do not exist where I’m going
