Aversions, “Allergies”, Soap Operas, and Preggie Pops
During the holiday season of 2018, I became a full-time vegetarian. Don’t read me wrong, it wasn’t intentional by any means. One week I ate only ham and mustard sandwiches on toast, and the next any mention, scent, or notion of meat made me sick. Ordinarily, a steak dinner fixed by my husband would have been an aphrodisiac, but instead it turned my stomach. I immediately launched myself into our bathroom, and we had an inkling that all was not as it seemed.

Ordained
The air rushes around the treetops as the great creature’s skin and tail bristle among the underbrush. The scent of pine, smoke, and ash fills his nostrils; yet this fire comes not from him but from another. The dragon nears closer cloaking himself among the woodland region he calls home. A campfire burns near a makeshift shelter as he watches a youngster add small branches to the fire. The activity piques the dragon’s curiosity, and he nestles himself in the bushes to watch the small child.

Child-Friendly Halloween Soundtrack
While some families pull out all the scary movies and spooky decorations, I must admit my family is much more laid back in our approach. On the list of fall family Halloween movies, you won't find a single spooky title on our chart. While this may be disappointing to some, it doesn't mean we don't celebrate in our own way. Our selections are "vintage" in nature and perhaps a bit old-fashioned; we prefer the term "classic." Still, our opinion is that our family fall favorites are "oldies, but goodies." This time of year and Halloween just isn't the same without the ones that make our list, and the fun-loving music that accompanies each. After all, those movies are what inspired our soundtrack in the first place!

The Great Chicken Chase
If you had told me a year or two ago that I’d be raising chickens with my family, I’d have responded with “No way!” I thought of chickens as filthy animals that carried all manner of bugs and illnesses. They were not something I personally considered owning. No matter how much I enjoyed eggs or the taste of the birds themselves, I decided I would source out local farmers’ stocks instead of having my own. The road trips across the plain states where chicken farming was prevalent only further asserted my decision. I won’t forget the stench of those “damn birds” that burned my nostrils, yet here I am raising them and changing my position. Oh, but crow makes a fine meal doesn’t it? Now, my family and I are learning a lot about chickens. Part of our learning has been somewhat “shooting from the hip” or “learning on the fly”, but I’ve found that the birds aren’t so disgusting after all. We even enjoy their company.

Fall Family Favorites
My family and I love fall; the colorful leaves, the crisp air, bonfires, flannel jackets, ciders, and harvest time. I personally love fall for another reason; cooking, baking, and creating delicious treats in our bright orange kitchen. If our kitchen were to identify with a season, it would undoubtedly be autumn. While our kitchen layout may not be the easiest to navigate, I don't regret our paint color choice or the woodland paintings donned by our walls. When we take our dogs for a walk to the end of our driveway each night, a comforting, warm, glow illuminates our home from the solitary light we leave on in the kitchen just like a candle of old. This appreciation inspires several culinary creations that feel like family and home.

I Was Not an Acrobat
I stir from my slumber, and take a deep breath. The world feels like it is moving at a far faster rate than I am used to, but then again everything has felt like that since The Greatest Show on Earth came to an end. The train ride starts out like any other. People go on about their mundane lives. I'm used to traveling, but the sights I saw were never as special as the company I kept. Travel was fun with the comradery of my circus family.

Lost Cause Kids
I'm looking into the eyes of a sweet nine year old girl at the mental health facility I was a case manager at. I'm talking to her and casually asking her about her day. Then, I said something I'm not sure if I should have. I could tell by the look in her eyes that it shattered her world.
