The printer hums once, then dies. Outside, dawn curls through the blinds, pale and uncertain, like it knows what’s happened here. On the desk, beside the cold dregs of a diner coffee, a single page cools under the ceiling fan’s rhythm. Ink still wet. Headline in bold: “Senator Holt and the Virex Network: An Investigation.”

The Earth turned beneath them, brilliant and silent. Commander Elena Morozov floated near the Cupola, her fingers braced against the window’s rim. Beyond the thick panes of reinforced glass, a swath of the Northern Hemisphere shimmered in the black. Her breath fogged slightly in her helmet, though the cabin temperature held steady. She hadn’t moved in an hour.
