For the first time in a week Chase fished for Charley’s apartment key and let himself in. Charley was a young headstrong twenty-three year old, gorgeous and seemingly impossible. They had been dating for five months. Chase expected to see the apartment a mess, diseased with empty ice cream tubs and worn out blankets with stains of marinara sauce from the corner pizza parlor. They had a huge fight, nearly broke up... God was he that arrogant that he thought she couldn’t live without him? Already?

On this particular afternoon, she was in the cafe down the road, lost in a daytime reverie as she often found herself thinking of her childhood and the seemingly innocent crush on her top professor. She had walked in wearing her normal type of attire as the sun had decided to come out and play, ordered her normal tea and biscuits, and sat in her shaded corner with her back to the wall.

It had been only weeks since she came to my home and even from then I knew that I loved her. I could sense, even in the smallest of gestures that she was hurting, and instantly I wanted to comfort her. I overheard that she had been sent to the country to heal from some sort of accident and that she was my landlady’s granddaughter. I thought it was kind of silly of the old woman to give a city girl such a monotonous task as stacking hay befit for a spry country boy.
