The Last Macaw
Most are familiar with the American Dream. It is the ultimate goal for many to achieve. What is the American Dream really? The answer differs depending on who you ask, but the idea of it is all the same: freedom from/of something. Lorenzo had his own version of the American Dream and he yearned for it more than ever. He loved his native land of Belize, but his home was changing and it was hardly loving him back. At the age of 28, Lorenzo had experienced immense loss and it all started six months ago. Change had begun before then, but it did not directly affect Lorenzo and his family up until then. Now that months have passed since his great loss, he was ready to move on. That is what Angeli would have wanted; that is what they would have done if she was still around.

Harambe
They are always listening and by "they" I mean them. Try it. Mention anything then open your phone or computer and watch the ads and sponsors flow. I’ve been using it to my advantage when I really need something, but lately it’s been surprising me on how well the algorithm has learned me. I feel special. I recently wrote a story part of the Summer Fiction Series Raging Bull Challenge titled Blossomed. It is about a young man attempting to establish his individuality against his strict parent’s standards. This story mentions The Charging Bull statue of Wall Street in NYC. The algorithm never forgot and must have liked it.

Welcome To Scorpio Season
Let’s face it, the majority of Libra season was overpowered by several planetary retrogrades which means one thing: we ALL were in our feelings attempting to discover something within ourselves. To put it lightly, our communication skills were tested and so was our determination. Do you really want what you've been asking for? Are you really ready for your upgrade? We should have been doing our shadow work in order to rise up out of the ashes as we enter the intense season of the Scorpio. Did you bring light to your shadow or did you allow the darkness to overpower it? Scorpios are intense, dark, mysterious beings, so be prepared for all that exposure and more. Scorpios are not the only sign to benefit from this season as we naturally possess traits from each sign when you research your complete chart. So don’t exclude yourself from this if you’re not a Scorpio because if you cried during Libra season then you are right on track to level up in Scorpio season. This would be an excellent time to research your complete chart and find out where those Scorpio traits fall so you know exactly what to focus on.

A Vocal Creator's Spotlight, Celebrating Black Writers.
I have been a writer all my life; writing has been my best form of expression and is my outlet for release. I feel good after writing and the thought of sharing my stories with others has always been a lingering idea. The first ad I ever saw about Vocal was for the Little Black Book challenge. I read the ad, kept scrolling, but the seed had been planted. Is there really a platform out there for writers to publish on and potentially make money on? Yes. Yes there is. The next week my mind entertained Vocal and so did my Facebook feed. The ad never left and I gave into the peer pressure. I googled Vocal. I was amazed by what I found and this was because I had no idea about such writing platforms prior to this ad. Not only was there a platform providing me with writing prompts and challenges to strengthen my skills, but also a very supportive community of readers and authors that have the potential to become friends. I joined Vocal and it has been one of the best decisions of my life. You can always check out my profile and stories here as this article is not about me. This article is my version of a Vocal Spotlight. This article is to celebrate the black writers that I have encountered here on Vocal.

Angel or Demon?
This bath is long overdue. I deserve this. I have been waiting for this all week. My Friday night bath is a routine of mine that I hardly skip. I can’t say never because there are always exceptions to the rule. Like tonight. The bath is later than usual because I went out to an after work spot with some colleagues. The vibe was cool and the music was right, but I look forward to my self care Friday nights which means I try not to stay out past 10. The steam from the running water has turned the mirror foggy and the bathroom hot. I begin to undress and I think of the man with whom I exchanged numbers. He was a fine brother who smelled so good. He wore Prada Black and I think it’s lingering on my clothes. He was successful too and we worked in the same neighborhood, I wouldn’t mind going for lunch.

A Killer Halloween Party
How fitting I would walk into the party on this song. Who plays this at a Halloween party? I wasn’t even supposed to be here...we were not supposed to be here. We had other plans, but he suddenly had a stomach virus after he ate something when we were going out to eat. This was a pre planned, pre purchased, non refundable, murder mystery dinner thing. But here I am with my heart pounding out my chest, either because I find him here and there may be a live action murder mystery at a party or if it’s this Michael Myers theme song with flashing strobe lights and smoke around me. Thank goodness the song is changing.

Meet Me At The Crossroads
“I’m going to tell her anyway.” “I don’t see the point, she’s not going to know what you’re saying.” “That’s what y’all think. Y’all treat her like...like…” I let out a huge grunt of frustration because there’s so many different directions I could go on how they treat Grandma, but I know my concerns fall on deaf ears. Literally. My paternal grandmother’s side of the family has a hearing loss problem as they age and as a result there are many medical problems, including Alzheimer's. When your brain no longer hears the daily sounds it used to, your mind can slowly go crazy. This is exactly what is happening to my grandmother. I did not treat her any differently than I would have pre-Alzheimer, but others have been. I hate it.
