My head feels like it’s splitting open. My ears are ringing. My body is injured, though I cannot say how badly. The paramedics are just trying to reassure me that I’m going to be okay. Car accidents happen every day. Some are good, and some are bad. I guess I got lucky.

The Kyra Daniels Cases: Death by Chocolate
“Strangulation is likely,” forensic analyst Anderson says aloud as he photographs the body of Katherine Wilson. The twenty-four-year-old ballet dancer had been found dead on her linoleum apartment floor, bruise marks around her neck. The chain lock had been torn from the wall: that indicated force entry. What few items had been in the room prior to the break-in were now damaged, perhaps from a struggle. Still, it looks so neat and tidy. The smell of bleach is heavy in the air. The forensics team is busy taking pictures and bagging a small rope that may have been the murder weapon, while my rookie partner, Detective Jeffrey Hayes, speaks with the roommate.

Day 1246: Dear Kathy, I spent six hours retrieving several piece of shrapnel from inside a man’s chest today. It’s barbaric how fast the devolution of humankind occurred and how bad things have gotten since The Event. Every town to which I venture seems to be plagued by gangs of ruffians whose sole purpose seems to be inflicting damage upon those that have already lost everything. Aren’t things hard enough without them?

No Regrets
This story that I’m about to tell you is still recounted as an amusing anecdote within my social circles. Though the main beats of the story are consistent, the level of hilarity derived from the tale differs from person to person. For me, on a personal level, it does bring a small modicum of enjoyment, though I cringe every time I relive it. My best friend called me his hero for this story, and I still think he considers this a true statement.

It had only been a few weeks since I sent Kara off to college. The job of being a parent comes with the horrible knowledge that, one day, your child will have to leave the nest. You spend years mentally and emotionally preparing yourself for it, always imagining that it’s down the road and you’ll deal with it later. You hear about it from friends, media, and even your own parents, and they all say the same thing: you are going to be so proud but feel so horrible at the same time. But you think that you’re special or different; you think that it won’t be as bad as all that. And you’re always wrong.

Mina’s daily routine on the research ship Leviathan didn’t differ much on a daily basis. After waking up at first light, she would eat a meager breakfast of gruel and sausages, spend most of the day doing routine maintenance and cleaning, and occasionally assist Dr. Bhatt in his research.
