It: Chapter Two (2019)
After the first film came out, I was laughing more than I was screaming; I genuinely though the movie was terrible because, in a darkened theatre, I wasn’t scared. Over time, I grew to love the film for it’s interactions between the characters, but it still didn’t change the lack of terror I felt for the clown. I remember the miniseries being very boring all together, but especially boring when the adults came around. So, I was expecting a very boring movie about adults trying to kill a demon clown and pretending to be afraid of it when I wasn’t. I was mainly going to see it because I had seen the first one, and the fiancé wanted to go. To my surprise, I got a film that I enjoyed much more than I was expecting.

Deep Blue Sea (1999)
After reviewing Secret Window, I wanted to tackle another movie that I loved but I kept seeing people (particularly online film critics) say is terrible. After watching Sharknado I knew which movie it had to be. This movie was another of my childhood favourites that I hadn’t seen in years, and since I’ve learned so much since then, and the face of cinema (and especially shark-related cinema) has evolved so much, I wanted to return to this film and see if it still held up.

Willy's Wonderland (2021)
Who’s decision was it to cast Nicholas Cage in a movie where he plays a transient who voluntarily cleans a haunted pizzeria and battles sentient animatronics… only for him not to say a word during the whole film? Whoever made that decision is an absolute genius.

Friday the 13th (1980)
While these movies might not be considered critical darlings, there’s no denying the legacy of horror that the iconic Jason Voorhees has left in his wake. Like most popular icons, there have been films, television shows, video games, toys, props, comics, and crossovers done with the legend. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 41 years, you’d know that the franchise didn’t really begin with him and Producer/Director Sean S. Cunningham didn’t intend for this franchise to be as popular as it was or go in the direction that it did.

It (2017)
First things first: I understand that Coulrophobia is a legitimate thing, and people like John Wayne Gacy didn’t help, and there was that whole clown thing in the news a couple of years ago, and a LOT of people were afraid of clowns because of Tim Curry’s performance in the 1990 miniseries. And, to be fair, Bill Skarsgard is creepy in a lot of the movie and there are some genuine scenes where he’s legitimately frightening. Having said all of that, though, I understand why Pennywise takes the form of a clown: he’s a joke.

Cruella (2021)
I’ve never really been a fan of the 1961 animated adaptation of 101 Dalmatians, and missed the 1996 live-action remake (starring Glenn Close). However, even someone with as little interest in the material as I had knows the menacing spectre of Cruella De Vil. With her skeletal form, white fur coat, black dress, cigarette, and signature black and white hair, she has such a commanding presence. And of course, there’s her theme song. Yes, Cruella is certainly one the most iconic Disney villains and one of the scariest.

A Quiet Place, Part II (2021)
To be honest, I thought A Quiet Place was one of those movies that didn’t need a sequel. It was fairly perfect and did a wonderful job using visual storytelling and focused on only four characters going through separate but similar toils. And I’m not against sequels; most of my favourite films are sequels, but there are more instances where the sequel fails to capture the magic of the original. Thankfully, this film does not fall into this trap.

A Quiet Place (2018)
I remember sitting in the theater, waiting to watch this film: nachos in my lap, a drink in the cup holder, and my seat tilted back to allow myself to watch the film in comfort. I was by myself, and the theater wasn’t really all that packed. I hadn’t seen a single trailer for this film, so I had no idea what to expect. When the film came on, and all the characters were silent, using only sign language, I’ll admit that I was a little perplexed.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021)
I usually enjoy anything that has Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s name attached to it and this film is no exception. Every moment is packed with heart-wrenching emotion, side-splitting hilarity, wonderful visual gags and symbolism, and fleshed out, three dimensional characters. The theme and plots, if I’m being honest, are cliched, but nothing to sneeze at, and are done in new and inventive ways. I went into this movie without having seen any trailers, any articles, even any stills aside from the posters, and I was blown away.

The Writer's Dilemma
I am a writer. In all honesty, the signs were always there. Even now, I look back at my life and wonder why (or how) I didn’t see it sooner. When I was eight years old, I wrote a short story for my grade three assignment. While most children wrote about a page or two, I wrote thirty, with illustrations. Oh sure, it was obviously written by an amateur: spelling and grammatical errors, lack of proper story beats or theme, and I’m pretty sure I ripped off Dragon Heart (1996) and Return of the Jedi (1983). I remember the teacher once telling me I couldn’t read the whole thing to the class because it was too long and would take up too much time. Nevertheless, that short story filled me with pride, bringing a light to my otherwise dismal life.
