Temptation. Content Warning.
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. I’ve never been so tempted to break a rule in my life. I’ve been watching her every night for months now. This ain’t my first guard detail, but it's my favorite by far. How could it not be?

Shadows Of The Lost Queen
“The river ran backwards on the day the Queen vanished. That were near a century ago now.” The old man said. “And you still remember it?” Thragnir said. They sat huddled near a small fire in the ruins of what had been an old temple. It had long since fallen into ruin, its grand roof torn away by conflict. What remained was a skeleton of what once stood—a few fractured beams and pillars lining the main aisle like broken bones pointing toward the heavens. The fire was almost too small to gain any benefit from it. If Thragnir hadn’t needed desperately to make the tincture that now brewed in a small flask in front of him, he probably wouldn’t have taken the risk.

Monster. Content Warning.
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. Every other room in this curious place we could explore at our leisure. For several months now, Emily and I had come here together. This was a special place to Emily. A place full of memories. A place where she could really relax and be herself without fear of judgment.

The Voicemail
The voicemail was timestamped three hours after she died. Of course, I didn’t know that when I listened to it the first time. I didn’t recognize the number, so I didn’t answer, and now I’m haunted by what ifs. The timestamp has to be wrong. Dead people don’t use cell phones, right? What if I had answered and she was already dying? What would she have said? What if I had answered and the man who killed had seen she was on the phone and decided the risk wasn't worth it? It’s ridiculous, I know. But I can’t stop thinking about it. I’m also haunted by the possibility that maybe the timestamp was right. Maybe that’s why she didn’t say anything. I guess I’ll never know for sure.

A Time To Say Goodbye
We drove up the snowy, winding road towards the cozy A-frame cabin. It was a trip we had made so many times before, but we both knew that this would be the last time. It wasn’t because we were having marital issues, far from it. It had been more than fifty years since Sarah and I said our vows and I’m very confident when I say that we loved each other even more on that last trip than we did then. The truth is that cancer is no respecter of love or marriage. It was the big “C” that was taking her from me.

The Console
This was it. I had exactly one shot to pull this off. The elusive white buck was at the edge of my range and yet I was confident I had the advantage. It had taken hours to track this legendary target. I had stalked him through the sparse pines, down the slope of a mountain, across a green valley, through a tangled forest of oaks and maples, and finally into the clearing where he now grazed. He was a truly magnificent creature. He had sixteen points on a symmetrical rack, and although he was known as the white buck, his pelt was more of a creamy tan, much lighter than others of his species but far from the brilliant white of my Arabian horse who even now was following behind me at a distance.
