Inspiration for my poem: Recently, I had a chance to sit down with a man who expressed some controversial and bigoted views on the subject of Native American land rights. The conversation quickly became heated as he dismissed the idea of returning land to Indigenous peoples.

The Dancing Dancer . Content Warning.
My name is Jolene Croft, I am a dancer. I was dancing on stage tonight. It was my fifth performance of the day. I asked Lilith, the stage manager, if I could take the nights off to go to night class. I was sick of dancing. She said no. I said what about days. She said no. I told her I quit, but she locked all the doors and wouldn’t allow me to leave.

The Last Train Ride. Content Warning.
It was the last train home. The train screeched as it rounded the bend. I tightened my grip around my purse, protecting the little cash I had left from the man in the hood and dark sunglasses staring at me. I promised myself that tonight would be different. No more cowering, no more hiding from my boss. I’d open a bottle of champagne by the fireplace, drink just enough to get buzzed then leave a message on my bosses machine demanding a meeting about a raise. Either I got paid more, or I quit.
