Top Gun Maverick
Going to the theater to watch a movie on the big screen has always been an iconic part of my life. A chance to unwind, relax, and escape from the rigors of the real world for a few hours while getting immersed in an alternate reality. Add in the unforgettable smell of artery-hardening, fake-butter-covered popcorn that greets you like a warm hug as soon as you step through those doors, and you catch a heavy dose of nostalgia. Some of the best memories of my childhood were going to movie theaters with my friends. It helps that I lived through decades that had the best fashion, music and of course movies—the 80’s and 90’s.

The day I saw Victoria Yager, my heart seized in my chest. I didn’t breathe as the rest of the world faded into fuzzy, unrecognizable blobs. Instant shock pierced through my soul before her uninterested gaze returned to their original position. My fate was sealed that instant—I had to meet her.

Sinister Decisions
Night began to settle on the village of Camden Passage, signaling to the street vendors it was time to pack up shop. The marketplace was a din of activity and noise as last minute hagglers attempted to strike a deal, horses hooves clattered through dusty streets, and the bustling crowd went about their nighttime rituals. The struggling lone rogue and down on his luck pickpocket, Alton surveyed his target from the shadows. The fat traveler advertised his garish wealth with either blatant, overconfident inexperience, or idiotic carelessness. He wore brightly colored silks that advertised wealth as well as glittering jewels that adorned several thick fingers. Alton knew the roads south of the village were ripe with bandits and thieves eager to chance across a rich prospect at this man. He wouldn’t make it a mile before his rotting carcass served as a banquet for vultures and maggots. Alton needed to lighten the lord’s load before that band of brigands got him and stripped everything worth a copper off him.

I believe I have lived an unordinary life, and have several stories hibernating inside my memory banks. This is one of those stories. Maybe my mental minions were cleaning out the junk drawers of my memory files and wanted me to make an executive decision on this memory. They wanted to know it this one would get sent to the trash file, or the keep for later file? I feel like a lot has been going to the trash without my input, so I decided to keep this little gem.

Larry the Shark
Two boats ripped across the surface above Larry the shark and his friend, Pierce the needlefish. Always intrigued about the finless, land dwelling, human world, Larry followed the commotion. Gunfire rang out between the boats, and soon a body splashed into the water, blood leaked from several bullet holes. Larry had never eaten a human. It was strictly forbidden by his family, but he was curious, especially when the scent of human blood hit his nostrils. The earthy, metallic scent caused his entire body to scream for the taste of flesh.

View From Six Feet Underwater
(Present time) A mournful wail carried across the lake so loud, so piercing that Jasper heard it through the closed window. His head snapped to the right when he heard it. This was not an animal sound, nor was it from a human. Whatever made that cry sounded like a creature enduring torment from the bowels of hell. Jasper’s insides squirmed with frigid terror. There was no time to look, he only had precious minutes to plan an escape, but the mournful cry drew him forward. Before Jasper knew he had moved, he pressed his hands and face to the glass. The platinum moonlight cast a glow on the unnatural mist covering the lake as it coalesced into human form and glided toward the cabin. A scream bubbled up from his throat, but he clamped his hands over his mouth to keep from drawing attention. He tore his gaze away from the advancing horror, ran toward the locked door in a desperate attempt to break through, but even with the running start, Jasper only bounced off the solid door. He refused to be a victim. He would find a way to escape.
