Work Snapshots | Blue Moon Valley
Discovering the Hidden Gem of Lijiang Through My Lens

Having lived in Lijiang for quite some time, I thought I knew the area well. The charming old town, the towering Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and the vibrant local markets had all become familiar sights. However, it wasn’t until recently, during a break from work, that I visited Blue Moon Valley for the first time. Despite its proximity to places I frequent, this stunning spot had somehow eluded me—until now.
Blue Moon Valley, also known as "Lanyuegu," is nestled at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The valley is renowned for its pristine, turquoise waters that shimmer under the bright sun, creating an almost otherworldly landscape. The name "Blue Moon Valley" is said to come from the shape of the valley, which resembles a crescent moon from above, and the deep blue color of the water, which seems to change with the light and seasons. It’s a place that feels almost like a dream, with its crystal-clear rivers, lush greenery, and the imposing backdrop of the snow-capped mountain.

On that day, with the sun shining and the air crisp, I took a short break from my work duties to explore this newfound gem. Armed only with my phone, I wandered along the pathways that wind through the valley, taking in the breathtaking scenery. It was impossible to resist the urge to capture the beauty around me, so I snapped a few photos here and there—nothing too planned or posed, just spontaneous shots of what caught my eye.

As I walked along the edge of one of the valley’s many pools, I was struck by the surreal quality of the water. It was so clear that I could see every detail of the rocks beneath the surface, yet the water also had an ethereal blue tint that gave it a magical, almost unreal appearance. The way the sunlight danced on the surface created patterns of light and shadow that were mesmerizing to watch. I couldn’t help but take a few photos, trying to capture the delicate balance between the natural and the extraordinary that seemed to define this place.
Moving further into the valley, I came across a series of small waterfalls cascading down from the higher elevations. The sound of the water was soothing, a gentle background melody that added to the peaceful atmosphere. The waterfalls weren’t large or dramatic, but their quiet beauty was captivating. I took out my phone again, this time focusing on the way the water sparkled in the sunlight, creating tiny rainbows in the mist. These small moments, often overlooked, seemed to hold the essence of Blue Moon Valley’s charm.

The valley was dotted with patches of vibrant greenery, from the delicate leaves of the trees that lined the paths to the bright, colorful flowers that added pops of color to the landscape. The contrast between the lush plants and the stark white of the distant snow-capped peaks was striking, a reminder of the diversity of nature in this region. I paused to take a few more photos, trying to capture the way the colors interacted—the deep blue of the water, the rich green of the plants, and the pure white of the snow.

What struck me most about Blue Moon Valley was its tranquility. Despite being a popular destination, there were moments when it felt like I had the entire place to myself. The air was filled with the sounds of nature—birdsong, the rustling of leaves in the breeze, and the gentle flow of water. It was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, a place where time seemed to slow down, allowing me to fully appreciate the beauty around me.

As I sat on a bench, taking in the view, I realized how fortunate I was to have this incredible landscape so close to home. It’s easy to get caught up in the routine of work and forget about the natural wonders that lie just beyond our doorstep. My impromptu visit to Blue Moon Valley was a reminder of the importance of taking a step back, even if just for a moment, to reconnect with the world around us.

When I returned to my work later that day, I felt refreshed and inspired. The photos I had taken on my phone, though simple, were a testament to the valley’s beauty. Each image captured a small piece of the magic that makes Blue Moon Valley so special. They were not just pictures, but memories of a place that had left a lasting impression on me.

Looking back at those photos now, I’m reminded of the joy of discovery, even in a place I thought I knew so well. Blue Moon Valley, with its serene waters and stunning views, is a hidden gem in Lijiang that I’m grateful to have finally experienced. And now, I can’t wait to return, not just as a visitor, but as someone who appreciates the deep, quiet beauty of this extraordinary place.
